The Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association organised a Christmas hard-court tournament for the benefit of affiliated country clubs, but as fewer than a do»!en players have entered, the tournament has been abandoned. Mr R. Browning, secretary to the association, stated last evening that he circularised the country clubs, asking as to a suitable time for the tournament, and was informed that Christmas was the most suitable. For some reason, which he did not know, there was a lack of interest in the proposal in the country. Some clubs in country distriots have not been affiliated with the Canterbury Association because they fear that the 2s 6d a head levy for Wilding Park will be imposed. Mr Browning states that this levy concerns only players in the city and suburban area. The fee for affiliation is a nominal one—half a guinea—and it brings considerable benefits. Mr Browning Intends to circularise all North Canterbury clubs, explaining the position. With the consent of the country play* ers concerned, those who entered for the *

country tournament will be included in the grass-court tournament at “Wilding Park. Entries for this tournament have been very fair, and the closing date has been postponed until Wednesday next. With only .a few Canterbury players entered for the New Zealand championships, the local tournament, for which the bulk of the ranking-list players have entered. should attract interest, Pairs in the men's doubles include A. B. and B. B. Louxhnan. Browning and Boddy. Munns and Ford, Barrows and Searle, and Goss and Greenwood. All the other events. handicap and open, have been fairly patronised. There is also a. good entry for the boys’ and girls' junior singles. SUBURBAN C GRADE. Following are results of Saturday's matches:— SHIRLEY V. ST PHILIP'S.
