EMPLOYEES OBJECT TO NEW MACHINE.
STONEMASONS’ DISPUTE HOLDS UP CONTRACT. (Special to the “ Star.") AUCKLAND. December 18. Fifteen stonemasons employed in preparing stone for use in connection with the new Auckland railway station were dismissed vesterday morning following upon a situation which arose some time ago when a machine was installed which the men contended was contrary to the provisions of the award. Since then, it is understood, the men have worked under protest and three weeks ago their case was heard before a Magistrate who. on Wednesday last, gave judgment against them. It was alleged that the machine concerned was injurious to the health of the men owing to the dust created. Matters were brought to a head on Saturday when the president of the Stonemasons’ Union (Mr J. Dunlop) was dismissed. A meeting was held at noon yesterday to discuss the matter, but the nature of the proceedings was not divulged, although it was announced that the men were prepared. to meet the employers, the Hansford and Mills Construction Company, Wellington, at any time. The men had received no intimation of the company’s decision last evening and the machines were idle throughout yesterday. No indication could be given by officials as to when arrangements would be made for work to proceed, but it is
understood that apart from perhaps one or two men it would be impossible at present to engage fresh labour. In the meantime a large section of the work will be held up, whereas an endeavour was apparently being made to expedite it, since the men are said to have been asked to work dviring the intervening days between Christmas and New Year.
