The Riccarton horses who are to race at the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting will leave for the north by to-night’s ferry steamer, and will go on from Wellington by the special horse train to- , morrow. * * # * P. V. Mason will take Honour and Philippic north to-night on the way to Auckland. These two are very well, and look certain to pay their way on the trip. Golden Armour will be left at home, as she has shown signs of lameness. T. H. Gillett will go north to-night with Count Cavour, Amor and Wharncliffe. They are in the best of health, and ready to show good form at the Auckland meeting. * *• sje *: J. M’Combe will leave for the North to-night with Crown Area, Moorgas and Court Jester. They have all done well .lately, and they should race prominently. 4 4 4^ F. Christmas has Red Heckle and '.Zeuxis in the best of health for Auckland engagements. They will go north to-night. * *■ * * The following trainers are booked to go north on Thursday night to fulfil engagements at the Manawatu meeting: F. D. Jones, First Sight, Toawai and Belcaire; A. M’Aulay, Nightmarch and Sir Roy; G. J. Pine, Silver Coot and Noteworthy; W. Stone, Silver Paper and Aspiring.

There will be an exodus of Riccarton horses on the Sunday night when horses with engagements at the Dunedin and West Coast meetings will start on their tours. * * * * R. Ellis intends to take Buoyant and Arrowmir south for the Waikouaiti meeting on New Year’s Day. * * * sje R. Longley may race Proud Knight at the Dunedin and Waikouaiti meetings, after which he may accompany Rascal and Bonrose to Invercargill. * * * ate R. Adamson has purchased Solfello, who will accompany Skyquest to the West Coast meetings. **. * * R. W. King has recommissioned the hurdler Aberfeldy, who has been in retirement since July, when he suffered .severe injuries through a fall at Trentham. He looks in good health to start a preparation. *• * * Although Awapuni-trained horses bulked large at the Woodville meeting numerically, they carried off more than their share of the stakes. Elicit, Archeria, Kalos. Grand National, Grand Acre, Kilmiss, Wyeford, and Locarno all won, and there were quite a number of minor place-fillers. Miss G. Maher, with Elicit, Grand National, Kalos and Locarno, did easily best. The Woodville trainer F. Davis, with Gascony and Clever (2), won three races, so he and Miss Maher between them carried off practically half the total. * * * * Kinross and Toxeuma, who raced at Woodville, have been discussed in some quarters as likely Great Northern Derby horses, but their Woodville efforts left something to be desired even though the classic is not going to be hard to win. Kinross was unequal to beating the Trial Platers, and although Toxeuma essayed rather better class contests, he failed to race* up to requirements. As classic contenders on Woodville form they can be dismissed. * Sjt ' * * One of the mysteries of the season was the backing of Chelone to beat Gascony at Woodville on Thursday, writes “Vedette”. In a five-horse field Chelone carried 150 tickets more than Gascony, who was not any better supported than Miss Pat. The result was that Gascony returned his supporters a wonderful price, and many disgruntled people could be found afterwards who, because it was raining, did not bother to go to look at the totalisator, thinking that Gascony would be at odds-on. More disgusted were certain people interested in totalisator dividends to whom Gascony’s price was more unpleasant than amazing. Their only solace was that there was also considerable discussion surrounding Chelone. There is not much doubt'that Chelone is an over-rated gelding. Briar Root, who scored so well in the Borough Handicap on the first day at Woodville, is in the Great Northern Derby, and it is intended to let her take her place in the field at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day. J. Barry has been engaged for the ride, although if Mithra were started Barry would be obliged to ride her under his engagement for the stable. Briar Root is by Chief Ruler out of Bonny Briar, an Englishbred mare by Bonarosa—Spring Briar, by Galloping Simon—Briseis, by Galopin. She is a bit on the small side for a classic winner, and her form hardly suggests success at Ellerslie, but she sticks on well, and in a lean year she cannot be denied a chance. By winning the Alison Cup in a good field, Transformer proved that he is a well-preserved veteran, and that on a clear track he is difficult to beat. Episodes in the career of the Thurnham— Ma.ngamaire gelding make interesting reading, says an Auckland exchange. He was bred by Mr James M’Nicol at Wairakau, Te Aroha, who a few years ago was breeding more extensively than at present. About February in each year several owners and trainers attending the Te Aroha race meeting made it a practice to visit Wairakau to inspect the thoroughbred stock, and some sales were generally effected. For three seasons there were no buyers for the one since known as Transformer, partly because he was not good looking or classy, while the Thurnham stock were not ih favour with trainers. Thus it comes to pass that as no buyer was forthcoming, Mr M’Nicol sent the gelding to the Waihou stock sale, where he was knocked down to Mr A. Forrest for the munificent sum of £B. The purchaser broke him in, named him, and in due course he was given a few spins on the local course, where he quickb' showed undoubted speed. Later he was sdld for a comparatively low price to Mr D. Twohill, of Thames, who has done remarkably well with the sale ring bargain. The romance of racing was exemplified last February, when the horse who four years previously went practically begging, won the coveted event of the district, the Herries Memorial Cup. TROTTING NOTES. The Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s summer meeting will be held at Addington on January 1 and 2, and will be a strong attraction for local trotting enthusiasts. Nominations will close at noon to-morrow. * * * 4c Nominations for the Grevmouth Trotting Club's meeting will close tomorrow night. * * * * Nominations for the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting will close on Thursday. * * * * Dilnon scored an easy win in the Innovation Handicap, the opening event at New Brighton yesterday. When he was first raced, he was very bad at the post, but with racing he has got out of this bad habit. He had a great turn of speed, but could not see out even a mile. W. Warren, who bred, owns and drives him in his races, has persevered w'ith Dilnon, and has developed him into a useful pacer. He is only a four-year-old, and he may show a lot more improvement. He is by Author Dillon from Nonnie, a sister to the once useful pacer Nancy Stair. * # 4c Sonoma Child, who was favourite for the Innovation Handicap, went a much better race than on the first day. He got second to Dilnon, but his final effort was not particularly impressive, as he mixed his gait under pressure. * * * * All Peters, the winner of the Shirley Handicap, showed good form at the recent Forbury Park meeting without winning. He is only a five-year-old, and is owned in the Ellesmere district. All Peters, as his name indicates, is a much inbred horse, as he is by Petereta from a mare by the same stallion. His owner drove the winner with good judgment. Being a good stayer, All Peters may go on to further improvement.

Molly Molloy trotted in better style in the Shirley Handicap than her training work indicated. She went soundly throughout, and was just beaten by All Peters. E. C. M’Dermott, however, was very busy keeping the mare to her gait. Harvest Child made amends for his failure on the first day by capturing the Waimari Handicap. He was driven the same style of race on each day, but in the Waimari Handicap the North Canterbury-owned pacer came home much more resolutely. Harvest Child is gradually working his way into the best company. He is a good pacer, with stamina as his best asset. He is by Sonoma Harvester from Gwenchild, and, as he is only a four-year-old, he seems certain to show further improvement. * * * * Kotuku Jack had again to put up with second place. He was second to Firpo on the first day, and Harvest Child beat him in the Waimari Handicap. The brother to Prince Pointer is at his best at present, and the mile track was in his favour. * * * * Racing is improving Shadowland, who finished third in the Waimairi Handicap, and he can be ticked off as a likely winner in the near future. He is a solid sort and a rare stayer, but he requires a lot of driving in his razees, as he is a very lazy customer. * * * * Becky Mine, who won the Summer Handicap, after an exciting finish, is held on lease by 11. Frost, the New Brighton trainer, who drove- her to victory. She was bred by Mr J. Westerman and is by Logan Pointer from Becky M. Becky Mine has not done much racing but she is an improving young pacer, who is likely to go on to better things in the future. She met with an accident recently and had to be eased in her work, which probably accounts for the large dividend her supporters received. * 4c 4*- * Avonwood has had the reputation of being more than a useful over short courses and in the Summer Handicap, driven by A. Butterfield, he put up a capital performance in getting second to Becky Mine. He finished on well over the last two furlongs. * * 4c * Milo Minto stayed just long enough to win the mile harness event. He is one of the few of Oinako’s progeny who is racing. He is owned in the Methven district and although he has not so far shown much form over anything but sprint courses, there is no reason why he should not race well over a longer distance, as Oinako was a capital stayer. * *• * * Arran Chief was the unlucky horse in the Avon Handicap. He met with a lot of trouble round the turn into the back stretch and this cost him the race, as he finished well and was only just beaten at the end by Milo Minto. * * * * Sarsaparilla owed his success in the New Brighton Handicap to his great stamina. He was a long way back at the end of half the distance, but over the last half mile he came along fast and trotting in brilliant style won decisively. He is by Ballin, an American stallion who showed that he could trot when raced soon after his arrival here. * * * 4* Randolph went one of his best races in the New Brighton Handicap. For once the fast but unreliable trotter kept fairly to his gait. He was early in the picture but his one break cost him a lot of ground. He finished well in second place. * * ok * Young Carbine went a much better race in the New Brighton Handicap than on the first day, when he failed to go away. Over the concluding stages he stopped badly, and when put to the final effort he broke, and only finished third. * * * * Granite City won the Beach Handicap by a narrow margin, and gave his owner a long overdue win. As a young pacer Granite City showed great promise, but unsoundness prevented him from showing his best form. It does not look as though he will ever be a high-grade pacer, except over short courses. * * * * Sahib seems best suited to short courses. Although he is looking at his best, he seems to just fail, even when raced at his favourite distance. E. C. M’Dermott drove Sahib in his best style in the Beach Handicap, but he tired in the final pinch, and was beaten on the post. * * * * Loburn, who won the Farewell Handicap, was favourite for the event, on account of his good showing on the first day, when he finished second to Dick Logan. He did not go away as quickly as on the first day, but before half the distance was covered he had the race .well in hand, and he raced home a decisive winner. Loburn is by Logan Pointer from a mare by King Cole, and he is showing plenty of speed in his races. He is useful over short coures, but he will never be a stayer. 3j« 4« * * Granite City showed that his effort in the Beach Handicap had not much effect on his powers, as, with his penalty in the mile saddle event, he put up a good performance in finishing second to Loburn. * * * * Lulu Lad, who paid a big dividend on the first day, when he finished second to Rose Marie in the Bowhill Handicap, paced a fine race in the Farewell Handicap, but could only get third place. The Australian pacer can ,only be regarded as a sprinter.

RICCARTON NOTES

Tuesday. The weather was fine for training operations this morning and the number six grass track provided good galloping ground. There was no reverse work, most of the horses under orders for Auckland to-night having completed their galloping the previous day, and proceedings were not specially exciting, although a lot of useful work was witnessed. Dutch Money sprinted half a mile in 50 4-ssec, going in good style all the Spode and Pangolin were associated over half a mile, which occupied 52sec. Pangolin was going well in the lead most of the way, but Spode caught him on the post. Greyfinch and After Ten took lmin osec for a useful gallop over five furlongs. Honeycomb beat Lancer by half a length over six furlongs in lmin 17 2-ssec. Sudden Storm and Swoopalong were well matched at the end of five furlongs, run in lmin 3 3-ssec. Childspla}’- reeled off five furlongs in lmin 2 l-ssec, and gave the impression that she could have done a little better. She is in good fettle at present and is galloping in her best form. Oriflamb and Pledge occupied lmin 5-4-ssec for a five furlong spin. Limerick accompanied Belcaire in a half-mile sprint in 51 2-ssec. Belcaire was going nicely in front. Discordia beat Sea JRaid half a mile in 49 2-ssec, a smart performance. Prickles and Full Feather were together after doing six furlongs in lmin 16 3-ssec. First Sight was lame when he made his appearance, but after being warmed up the trouble disappeared. He was then sent for a mile gallop, which he accomplished in lmin 43 2-ssec. The first half-mile was done in 50sec, and five furlongs in lmin 3sec, while the last half-mile took! 53 2-ssec. He moved freely throughout the gallop and pulled up well. Amor and Wharncliffe were companions in a working gallop over a mile, taking lmin 24see for the last six furlongs. Tommy Dodd was slightly in front of Silver Paper and Aspiring at the end of half a mile, run in 50sec, a useful gallop. Front Rank finished three lengths in front of Pahautanui at the end of a six furlong spin, in lmin 16 4-ssec. Front Rank’s effort was attractive. Battle Colours occupied lmin 19 l-ssec for six furlongs, but he did it very easily. He will not fulfil his Dunedin engagements, but he may race at Waikouaiti or Invercargill. Count Cavour, assisted by Toawai over the last six furlongs, covered a mile in lmin 44 4-ssec, the last six furlongs being done in lmin 17sec. Count Cavour, who got the better of the pick up, was over two lengths in front at the finish. He went well all through his gallop. Caterpillar beat Uproar easily over five furlongs in lmin 2sec, a very smart effort. Mentone beat Kilcavan over half a mile, which occupied 52sec. Shinshape and Lancer were schooled over four hurdles yesterday and gave a good display of jumping. TRENTHAM NOTES. (Special to the “Star.”) WELLINGTON, December 18. Practically every horse in training at Trentham was produced this morning and they were given varying ejegrees of work. The inside of the triaf grass was available and provided excellent going, if a little on the easy side. Oratrix and Concentrate had their last gallop before leaving for Ellerslie. They were the only ones to work the reverse way, and they galloped a mile in lmin 43sec, the first half in 53sec and the second half in 50sec. Both horses finished full of running and it was a pleasing performance. Cimabue, brought home for the last two furlongs by Deluge, dashed over half a mile in 49sec. He showed all his old time brilliancy. Diana’s Lad galloped a mile in lmin 46sec, going strongly all the way. Historic, going leisurely round the turn, galloped a mile in lmin 49sec. He went fast at the beginning and at the end of his gallop and pleased the track watchers. Roi De Val. sprinted half a mile in 51sec. Push sprinted three furlongs in 36sec and did it well. Tcheka, brought home by Rotowhero, galloped seven furlongs in lmin 31sec. Lady Gay took lmin 323 sec to run seven furlongs. Mandarine was of no use to Rory Morin a gallop over seven.furlongs in lmin 323 sec. First Money was going better than Duellona in a sprint over half a mile in 51 2-ssec. Duellona is not a good track worker. The brother to First Sight, who has done little work, surprised by getting to the end of half a mile in 50sec. Decoy Bird was kept to easy pace work over two circuits. The six Trentham horses for the Auckland Cup meeting will leave by the special train for Ellerslie to-morrow. They are Catkin, Tcheka, Tea Queen, Oratrix, Cimabue, Concentrate. Endorse has not pleased her trainer during the last few days and she will not be raced during the holidays.

SUCCESSFUL MEETING AT NEW BRIGHTON. HARVEST CHILD WINS PRINCIPAL RACE. The summer meeting of the New Brighton Trotting Club was concluded yesterday in fine weather. The sun shone brightly throughout the day, but a strong ea??terly wind was in evidence. The attendance was not so large as on Saturday, but there was quite a large crowd, in view of the fact that the Anniversary Day holiday was not generally observed in the city. It was a speculative crowd, as was shown by the totalisator figures. The investments for the day were £18,745, which, added to the £20,499 handled on Saturday, made £39,244 for the meeting. Last year the total on the first day (Anniversary Day) was £13,928 10s, and on the second day (Saturday) £17,152 10s, or £31,081 for the meeting. Good fields contested most of the events, and there was some very interesting sport, several close finishes being witnessed. Harvest Child registered a good performance in winning the Waimairi Handicap, the chief event of the meeting, in which Kotuku Jack and Shadowland repeated their first day’s efforts by filling the minor places. The meeting was well managed in every department, Mr 11. E. Goggin once more demonstrating his fitness for the secretary's position, which he has filled with credit during the absence on holiday of his chief, Mr A. I. Rattray. The president, Mr W. E. Thompson, had a busy day, giving a general oversight to the arrangements, and he had the assistance of a band of hardworking stewards. The officials had reason to be well satisfied with the results which attended their efforts, as the meeting was a great success.

The Innovation Handicap saw Sonoma Child made favourite. Dilnon went away at a fast clip and was in the lead at the end of half a mile, with Great Abdullah and Locanda Lu next. There was not much change in the order along the back, except that Locanda Lu dropped back and Sonoma Child improved her position. Once they got into the straight Dilnon was still in the lead, and although Sonoma Child put in a good dash he failed to keep steady and M. Holmes eased him when he saw pursuit of Dilnon was hopeless. Arikitoa, who had not been prominent in the early stages, finished fast in third place, the tiring Great Abdallah being next, with Locanda Lu close up. Pet Locanda was set a task far beyond her present powers, although she went a good race for a mile.

The Shirley Handicap looked like being a gool contest early, but at half a mile St Petrox, Oval and Molly Molloy had a distinct lead on the rest of the field. The field commenced to close up over the last mile, and along the back All Peters considerably improved his position. Rounding the turn into the straight All Peters had Molly Molloy beaten and won easily. Lucky Voyage, who is a useful-looking sort, trotted well in patches, and St Petrox did not see out the final stages, after being prominent all the way. Kyra, after a good beginning, broke up and was out of the contest in the first halfmile. Koro Peter found the opposition too good for him, and he was never a likely winner. Nancy Bingen did not go away at the start, and Trampcrisp. after a good beginning, broke and failed to settle down to his work again. Repute was going well at half the distance, where a bad break settled her chance. Oval was in the picture for a mile and a half, but she did not stav.

Ariki and Invader failed to go away right in the Waimairi Handicap, and Warepa, Kotuku Jack, Shadowland and Rebel were racing in that order to the first turn, where Sarella broke and badly stopped Sunfish. The order was not changed at the end of a round, except that Kotuku Jack had taken the lead from Warepa. William the Great improved his position along the back, where Rebel broke. Rounding the turn to the straight Harvest Child, who had always been handy to the front division. drew up to Kotuku Jack and outstayed him in the run home, winning by about a length. As on the first day, Warepa failed to stay, whilst Sunfish’s chance was extinguished in the first half-mile by Sarella breaking. Shadowland did not finish as resolutely as on the first day, while William the Great went one of his most solid races. Billy Sea was never dangerous, but Fight Ever paced a fine race from the back mark, and he may win a good stake in the near future, as he is very well at present. There was a good contest, with the best finish of the meeting to date, in the Summer Handicap. After Connie Dillon had led for a quarter of a mile, she broke. Audrey Dillon then took charge and opened up a big break from the rest of the field. Great Abdallah was in second place with half the journey gone, but the field closed up, and Becky Mine was very close to the leaders. In the run to the post Audrey Dillon stopped badly, while Avonwood put in a fast run in the straight. Avonwood looked like beating the leading pair, but Becky Mine stayed out the final stages and won by a narrow margin, while Avonwood beat the tiring Audrey Dillon by a head. Baron Bingen paced a capital race, and he finished fourth. He did not get too good a run along the back and had to go on the outside rounding the turn into the straight. Wooden Bridge was weil backed, but he did not at any stage look like getting near the leaders. Awaiti was pacing well at half the distance, but over the last part of the race he failed badly. There was not a large field for the mile harness event, in which Lord Bingen, driven by F. Holmes, was favourite. Direct Tod went away fast and led Lord Bingen over the first quarter of a mile, while Bonnie Prince and Great Triumph were bojth very bad off the.mark, failing to go away right. Going out of the straight, Arran Chief met with trouble, and he dropped back. Milo Minto was always near the leaders. On reaching the straight, he came along and took charge, but had to be hard driven to beat a fast finishing run by Arran Chief. Lord Bingen, who had every chance, failed badly in the concluding stages. Bonnie Prince, once he got going, paced a fine race and finished up in fourth place. Ouimet broke badly, and Direct Tod stopped quickly when the straight was reached. Happy Rosa was made favourite for the New Brighton Handicap, but, after a good beginning, she broke in the first furlong, and this spoilt her chance. At one stage of the race, Marvin Junior had such a commanding lead that it seemed as though he would never be headed. He kept his position till well into the straight, when he again broke and would not settle down to trot again. There was a fine race to the post. Sarsaparilla staying on and winning comfortably from Randolph, who was on his best behaviour and put in few breaks. Young Carbine, who was following Marvin Junior for most of the race, kept steady till the last hundred yards, when he put in a break and only got third. Wild Hebe was responsible for performance, going all the way without a mistake, and he finished fourth. Xourmahal did not see out the journey, nor did Our Lady. Frisco Beau and Proud Ata did not show their best form. Audominion trotted a fine race on the first day amongst the pacers in the chief event, but he failed to go at all well in this race.

The coupled pair, Dundas Boy and Muchine Jun., were the popular choice lor the Beach Handicap, with Jolly Chimes next best supported. Sahib and Granite City were the early leaders, followed by Warepa and Firpo. Sahib kept the lead most of the way, but Granite City just headed him on the post, and won by the narrowest of margins. Firelight was always handy, and finished third. Warepa, who did a lot of racing at the meeting, was prominent for about half the journey, when the South Canterbury-trained pacer dropped out of the race. Firpo was the disapjjointment of the contest, lie has been racing well of late, but he stopped badly over the last part of the journey. Dundas Boy finished fourth, after a fair performance. Firelight is

racing most unluckily. He was always close to the leaders, but in the final dash he failed to sustain his run, and finished third. Jolly Chimes put up a fine race. He caught up to the leaders and was pacing well round the turn*, but over the last furlong he just failed to go on with his effort. Cardinal Logan and Jack Potts, who are engaged in the Auckland Cup, at the end of the month, were both some distance back at the conclusion of the race. Only nine horses started for the mile saddle event, and it was not at all a good contest. Alvira and Audience failed to go away right, and Stan Wilkes was early in the lead, and Loburn, who was favourite, not far behind. Audience got going quickly, and his great pace enabled him to go into third place at the end of two furlongs. Loburn headed the leader some distance from home, and, staying on well, he won easily by about six lengths. Stan Wilkes stopped quickly, and Granite City, who had a penalty of 12yds for his previous win, finished second, with Lulu Lad, who started slowly, close up third. Brutus was fourth, but he did not show much speed in the early stages, despite a good beginning. Bingen Lad raced badly, and Darknite is not showing his best form at present. Alvira showed some speed when she got going, but her bad start spoilt any chance she might have had of winning. HANDICAPS. WAIKOUAITI RACING CLUB. The following handicaps have been declared:—
