HOUSEHOLD HINTS.
If fruit is rolled in flour before pitting into a cake or pudding it will not sink to the bottom. A little blacklead rubbed into boards which are then polished with a floor polish will give a stained floor the appearance of old oak. When cleaning bamboo furniture, use a brush and warm water and salt, lo prevent it from turning yellow. When dusting carved furniture always use a painter’s brush to get into all the crevices. Never use soap in washing silk stockings. Bran in water is the proper fluid to use —four tablespoons to a quart of water. Rinse in several clear waters, pressing the water out. Dry stockings in the sun. Tortoiseshell should not be washed as it makes it brittle and destroys the polish. The method for cleaning is to rub it with a jewellers’ rouge mixed with a little olive oil, then polish with a leather. To remove rust from metal, take a small quantity of light garden soil, sift it free from grit, mix with a little paraffin, and rub the metal well. Cleaning old pewter in this way is most successful.
