A very popular and timely recollection was made by the Governor-General at the annual prize-giving ceremony of Wellesley College, Wellington. Sit Charles Fergusson had almost completed his remarks prior to presenting the prizes, when he said, “There is just one other thing I want to say. I have not forgotten everything I learnt when 1 went to school—whatever you may think—and one thing I remember is that whenever anyone made a speech at the school he always asked for a holiday. I am now going to ask Mr Russell to put a ‘Governor-General’s holiday’ in the ‘bank’ for you, so that at any time next year you want to do anything in particular and you have not got a holiday in hand, you can use the Governor-General’s holiday.” , His Excellency’s remarks were greeted with loud applause.
