PREFERENCE FOR RESIDENT LABOURERS WILL BE POLICY.
NO DATE FIXED FOR WAIMAK. TRUSTS WORK. Mr P. C. Climie and Mr H. Worrall, representing the Unemployment Committee, waited on the Works Committee of the Wai*r*akariri River Trust yesterday and asked that the trust, in taking on men, should give preference to permanent residents. Mr Worrall said that the request was sound and reasonable, as single labourers went all over New. Zealand, while married local men could not leave their families in order to seek work in other parts. Mr J. Leslie, chairman of the committee, replied that the trust had not decided how the work should be done. If by contract the matter would rest with the contractors. If the trust itself did the work, the deputation’# wishes would be met.
The trust does not know where the work will begin. At present it is arranging for buying land, and is making preparatory arrangements.
