SCHOOL AND PLAYGROUND.

(BY

“DEMONI.”)

CRICKET. LAST SATURDAY S GAMES. Last Saturday, the tenth round of matches was set down to be played in the Canterbury Boys’ Cricket Association’s competition but, although a satisfactory start was made, rain came on at about 4 p.m. and it was found necessary to draw stumps shortly afterwards. Xone of the games were completed, this being particularly unfortunate in the Fifth and Seventh B grades where the round was the final of the competition. However, as the results of last Saturday’s games could not have affected the final positions in these grades, the abandoning of the matches was not as serious as it might have been.

A suggestion was made that extra time should be allowed during the mid-week, so that the games could be finished. This matter was discussed by the Competitions Committee and, after full consideration, it was decided that the law's of cricket would not allow this course of action. In consequence all the fifth grade matches were recorded as draws and the final placings in the competition were as follows: Technical A, 38* points; St Andrews, 32 points; School A, 30 points; Technical B, 25 points; Grammar, 23* points; School B, 5 points. Two trial games, School v. St An-drew’s-St Bede’s and Technical v. Ric-carton-West Christchurch, were started last Saturday, but unfinished owing to rain. It was decided to resume these matches this afternoon and to-morrow, play commencing at 4 p.m. on each day. The teams will be the same as selected for last Saturday with the exception that E. J. Harris (Technical), W. M. Brown (Technical). L. F. M’Menamin (St Bede’s) and L. C. Henwood (Technical) are also expected to be present.

In the seventh A grade, all three games were drawn last Saturday and, in consequence, the points stand as ■follows;—St Bede’s A, 33 points; School A, 32i points; Grammar, 2S points; St Andrew’s A, 26 points; Technical A, 201 points; Lin wood A, 12 points; Riccarton, 5 points.

Technical A and Linwood A have each been allowed an additional six points owing to their having two byes. .

The last round in the seventh B grade saw only one game brought to a definite decision. Linwood B defaulting to Technical C, the remainder of the matches being drawn. Linwood B have still a game to play with Technical D, but the result of this match cannot have any vital effect upon the final positions in the competition, which has been definitely won by West Christchurch. The postponed match js to take place next Saturday and, at present, the points stand as follows: West Christchurch, 42* points; Technical B, 28 points; School B, 24£ points; Linwood B, 21 points; St Bede's B, 19* points; Technical D, 18* points; Technical C. 17 points; Linwood C, 13* points; St Andrew's B, 7* points. ADDITIONAL TRIAL GAMES. Next Saturday, a trial match for the fifth grade players will be played at Hospital Corner. It is to take the form of a game between a combined team from School and St Andrews’s and a similar side from Technical and Grammar. The selectors, Messrs C. S. Johnston and A. H. Wilder, have chosen the following teams* for this match ; School-St Andrew’s—T. Armstrong (captain), Hart-Stewart (wicket-keep-er), C. C. Thorne, R. Pollock, A. Jamieson, E. Hay, D. Cobden, A. Rix and G. S. A. Biltcliff, have decided to hold other trial games next Saturday. These will be winners v. winners match and losers v. losers. As the seventh grade players are also eligible for the junior representative team, trial matches have been arranged in both sections of this grade. Owdng to the seventh A grade players being engaged in competition games next Saturday, the trial in this section is set down for this afternoon and to-morrow at the Hospital corner.
