BOARD BESIEGED FOR DONATIONS.

VOTES NEARLY £25 TO VARIOUS OBJECTS. Six requests for donations resulted in the Lyttelton Harbour Board voting nearly £25 at its meeting to-day. Only one request was unsuccessful —that of the Canterbury Surf and Life-Saving Association for assistance in the appointment of permanent beach patrols during the Christmas and school holidays.

The amounts voted were as follow: Harbour Board employees’ picnic, up to £10; Sanders Cup contest at Akaroa £5 ss; Cornwell Cup contest, at Lyttelton, £5 ss; Lyttelton permanent railway employees’ picnic £2 2s, waterside workers’ picnic £2 2s.

“ Already Given Reels.” When the Canterbury Surf and Life Saving Society’s letter was read, the chairman of the Board, (Mr R. Galbraith) asked that no action be taken, as the Board had no interest in the beaches mentioned. The Board had already given life-saving reels. "We should assist them,” said Mr W. J. Walter. "Helping in saving life is more important than helping picnics at Lyttelton.”

Mr F. liorrell stated that if a giant were given, other beaches, such as Waikuku and Kaiapoi, should be assisted if application were made. ‘We have done our duty to these beaches,” said Captain Munro. No action was taken. “Give Them Five Guineas.” The chairman reported that some additional accommodation would be required at Lyttelton for the sailing of the Cornwell Cup contest, and he asked that the engineer be authorised to extend by another 30ft the recentlyconstructed dinghy platform near the dock.

The report was adopted. A member: How much have we left of our unauthorised expenditure? The secretary: About £276. "Give the Cornwell Cup people five guineas, then,” urged a member; and the suggestion was approved. “A Little Knowledge—” " This is an example of the saying that ‘ a little knowledge is a dangerous thing,’ ” stated the secretary, after reading an application for assistance from the Sanders Cup contest committee. The application asked for a grant “in view of Akaroa Harbour being under the jurisdiction of the Board.”

“ The board has nothing to do with Akaroa Harbour,” stated the board’s secretary. “It is under the control of the Akaroa County Council.” The chairman: It.wouldn’t hurt us to give them five guineas. “We should assist them. They are running a big race. I move that £lO be granted,” said Mr W. J. Walter. A vote for £5 5s was passed.
