A lantern lecture on “ Excavations in Egypt and the East ” was given by the Rev J. F. Feron. of Rangiora, at a members’ social of the Canterbury Justices of the Peace Association in the Jellicoe Hall last evening. Mr Feron, who had about 120 slides, dealt with the subject interestingly, and was listened to with deep attention. Mr A. Williams, president of the association, was in the chair. The lecture was followed by a musical programme. The Christchurch Fire Brigade was called to the house of Mr Edwin Dennis, 19, Phillip Street, Linwood, at 3.35 p.m. yesterday. The building is a combined grocery shop and residence, having two stories and seven rooms. The fire broke out in a bedroom on the upper floor. That room was completely gutted, but the brigade were able to save the rest of the house. The house is insured in the London and Lancashire Office for £4OO, and the stock in the shop for £l5O, but there is no insurance on the furniture. LADIES! Make your home a “ Lite-Wurk *' home.
