CHAMPION SCULLER DOES GOOD TRIAL.

(Special to the “ Star.”) WANGANUI, December 5. A. R. G. Jackson, the amateur champion sculler, who is leaving Wanganui on Thursday en route to Sydney to compete at the New South Wales championship regatta, had his final row here yesterday 1 morning. It consisted of a trial over a mile course. The weather was perfect and the water smooth, with just a suspicion of current. The sculler was paced by \V. Webb, who had a slight lead at the etart. Jackson quickly settled down to long, sweeping stroke of twenty to the minute. Webb kept him going at top speed for a quarter of a mile. Then Jackson went on by himself, maintaining the same rate of stroke until 100 yards from the post, when he quickened to thirty, finishing strongly. Throughout his rowing was of a high class, the blade work being very clean, and he used his great weight to advantage. It was a fine performance and very favourably impressed Webb, who is going over with Jackson to Sydney, and others who witnessed it.

The time recorded was fast, being well under six minutes. The opinion is expressed that Jackson will worthily represent the Dominion in the race against the Olympic champion, H. R. Pearce.
