ANNUAL REPORT OF ART SOCIETY.
The report and balance-sheet of the Canterbury Society of Arts will be presented at the annual meeting, to be held on December 18, at 8 p.m. The report states that the annual exhibition was opened on March 15, and was honoured by having on exhibition a panel of work by the Lady Alice Fergusson. The exhibition contained a very representative collection of work from all parts of New Zealand, augmented by exhibits from New Zealand painters abroad. In the matter of sales of pictures, last year’s total was exceeded by over £200.' “ Cynthia’s Birthday,” by H. Linley Richardson, R.8.A., was purchased by the society with the assistance of the City Council’s grant. An arts and craft exhibition, the first held for many years, introduced several new working members, and brought together an interesting though small display of work. The students’ section, and the generally high standard of work exhibited by members, gives promise for future activities in this direction. The second retrospective exhibition has just closed, this year’s being devoted to the work of Miss M. O. Stoddart. The works assembled covered almost the entire period of this painter’s professional activity. Mr Murray Fuller used the gallery for the display of a fine collection of British paintings and etchings, many of which remain in the province. The permanent collection was benefited by a picture from the collection by S. L. Lamorna Birch, A.R.A., which was donated by a few enthusiastic citizens.
