Good Prices Realised At To-day’s Wool Sale.

THE first Christchurch ■wool sale of the 1928-29 season was held at the Caledonian Hall to-day, when a catalogue comprising 16,154 bales was offered to a full bench of buyers. All the wool-buying countries were represented, English, Continental, American and Australian buyers being present, as well as representatives of the local mills. The public gallery was well filled with growers and others interested.

The catalogue and order of sale were as follows:

Bales New Zealand Farmers’ Co-op 3,071 New Zealand Loan Company .. 1,294 National Mortgage 1,808 Dalgety and Co 3,968 H Matson and Co 1,582 Pyne, Gould, Guinness 4,431 Total 16,154 The wool generally had opened up in good condition. Most of it was well grown without being too long, and, on the whole, it was bright and wellconditioned. Bradford Competition Eases. As the sale progressed, competition from Bradford eased, some of the English representatives hardly putting a bid in. Others continued to buy freely, though they may have had orders to fill from Continental and American houses. There was a steady demand from the Continent, and American representatives also bought a fair amount of wool. Generally prices were about equal to those ruling at the opening sale last season, though super fine wools were inclined to be easier, in cases by Id a lb. In the first three catalogues comprising 6089 bales, 800 were passed in, ot about 13 per cent. By the luncheon adjournment (1 p.m.) over half the catalogue had been offered. Up to the adjournment, best prices were:—Half-bred 24d, Corriedale d, Merino 2l£d, three-quarter-bred 20d, cross-bred 174 d, fine pieces 20id, crossbred pieces 13id, locks lOid, bellies 16id, crutchings 16id. Good Demand. The sale was a good one, the prices being about the same as those ruling at the first Christchurch sale last year. At times the demand was inclined to be irregular, especially in the earlier stages. Some of the stubborn lots did not e’icit a great deal of competition, but there was spirited bidding for all good class wool. There was satisfactory competition from the Bradford buyers, and the Continental representatives also showed a keen desire to get wool suited to their requirements. The local mills were in the market for the super grades of the finer wools. Half-bred formed the bulk of the catalogue, with a fair proportion of three-quarter-bred and cross-bred. There were only odd lots of merino and Corriedale. Of the first catalogue of 3071 bales about 460 were passed in. The passings in the main comprised lower grades of wool, and in some cases, no doubt, owners had an exaggerated idea of values. Later the demand became qiore steady and the passings less frequent.
