THE CRICKET FIGHT.
BY SINBAD. The fellows who of cricket write In all important English towns, As they survey the Brisbane fight, Have certainly their ups and downs. The Englishmen it first appeared, Were due to get it in the neck, The speed of Gregory they feared, And Chapman’s team seemed near a wreck. So all the English papers told, A sympathetic tale of woe, Said they: “ We cannot hope to hold, In check our fearsome Aussie foe.” But Hendren then triumphant rose, And Larwood made the Aussies droop, So now the critics’ chorus grows Quite jubilant and cock-a-hoop. Each headline and each poster bill, Declares that Ryder’s men are gone, Debating whether Chapman will Decide to make them follow on. Yet I can quite expect to-night, Will see another change of tone, If Bradman now should come to light, Despondently will England groan. What can they have beneath their thatch. To write of things they do not know. If critics’ boost could win the match, The Aussies would not stand a show.
