Wilkins’s ’Plane Meets Mishap In Landing In Antarctic.
MACHINE CAME DOWN BEAUTIFULLY, BUT WHEELS SANK THROUGH HOLE IN ICE. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Received December 3, 10.35 a.m.) LONDON, December 2. SIP, HUBERT WILKINS, in a wireless message from Deception Island, dated November 30, states that there was another postponement of their efforts to take-off in the air on the Antarctic, flight. The aeroplane must now be fitted with skis. An accident occurred during the transferring of the two aeroplanes from the ship, when the propeller and wings of the aeroplane Los Angeles were damaged. The machine came down beautifully, hut its wheels struck a hole in the ice, through which it sank until the wings and fuselage held it. The pilot, Lieutenant Carl Eielson, fell through the ice, but clambered out none the 'worse for his ducking.—Australian Press Association-United Service.
