“ HAD ONLY STOLEN FOURPENCE WORTH WHEN SURPRISED."
HOW A LICENSEE LOST HIS BOTTLES.
William Thomas Brown came before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning, charged with the theft of two bottles, valued at 4d, the property of George Cudby. “Mr Cudby is the licensee of the Cafe de Paris Hotel," said Sub-Inspect-or Fitzpatrick, “ and over a period latterlj' he has had quite a serious loss, amounting to £ls or £2O, through empties being stolen from the yard at the back of the hotel. The accused was found last night at the back of the hotel. A watch had been set on account of the losses, and a porter sur prised him when he had taken only two bottles. The man is apparently inclined to wander about other people’s property.” “ I just went round to get a square rigger to put a drop of beer in,” said the accused. “ You knew you could get that in the bar if you desired it," said the Magistrate. - The accused was convicted and discharged.
