PARLIAMENT WILL RUN FULL COURSE, MEMBERS THINK.
(Special to the “Star.”) WELLINGTON, November 28. Members of the Reform caucus met in Parliament building to-day and continued their deliberations throughout the morning. It was gathered that members of the party anticipate that Parliament, one* it settles down with the new Ministry, will run its full course and that no good purpose will be served, either from the party or public viewpoint, in utilising its voting power to catch out the future Ward Government by snap divisions. There may be an occasion to demonstrate this policy before the noconfidence debate ends, as the House of Representatives, on being called together by commission on Tuesday, will be directed to appoint a Speaker. When Sir Charles Statham was proposed in 1923 the Labour Party nominated Mr M’Combs, but in the next Parliament Sir Charles Statham was elected unopposed. It is highly probable that he will again have an uncontested appointment, as there has been no inclination among United or Reform members to discuss possible alternatives. Simultaneously with the Reform Parliamentary caucus, an important party meeting is taking place at Reform headquarers, where leading members of the executive from all parts of New Zealand are considering future plans. The advice tendered to Reform Parliamentarians by their Wellington newspaper .is that caucus, in discussing its future policy, has no reason to make hasty decisions, because Mr Coates and his followers are not called upon to commit themselves to any course of action beyond affording Parliament an opportunity to vote on a want of confidence motion.
