VICEREGAL. His Excellency the Governor-Gen-eral, Sir Charles Fergusson, accompanied by Lord Waleran, arrived from the north this morning and went on to Dunedin by the express to attend the annual communication of the Grand Lodge of Freemasons. Mr J. Heasman, 103, Rossall Street, leaves for Napier to-morrow evening. The Commissioner of Police (Mr W. B. M’Uveney) was a passenger by the ferry steamer from Wellington this morning. Mr Charles Parker, a well-known hansom-cab driver, of Christchurch, is at present in hospital, but is making satisfactory progress. Mr A. Wyness, director of His Master’s Voice (N.Z.), Ltd., will be leaving Wellington at the end of next month for London, via Sydney. Mr Russell E. Chester, of the Royal Academy of Music staff of examiners, will leave Auckland for Sydney by the Aorangi on December 31. There he will connect with the Orama for Naples. Messrs G. S. Loughlin, B. Sutherland, A. Sutherland (Wellington), G. J. Prodgers, G. J. Grindell (Timaru), J. L. Vergette (Napier) are guests at the United Service Hotel. At a meeting of the board of directors of the Southern Cross Assurance Company, Ltd., Mr Frank R. Burnham, general secretary for New Zear land, was presented with a silver tea and coffee service, the gift of Mr Thomas J. Confoy, governing director, who is at present on a visit to the Dominion. Sir Joseph Ward, New Zealand chairman of directors, in making the presentation on behalf of Mr Confoy, referred to the enterprise that had been recently displayed by Mr Burnham in furthering the company’s interests. Mr Confoy’s gift exemplifies his appreciation of instances of personal initiative shown by officers of the company.

Sir Heaton Rhodes arrived from north this morning. Messrs A. M. Howden (Auckland) and A. B. Jamieson (Wanganui) are guests at Warner’s Hotel. Bishop West-Wats on, who went to Timaru on Saturday to lay the foundation stone of a new church there, returned to Christchurch yesterday. A motion of sympathy with Mr G. T. Booth in the death of his wife was carried at yesterday’s meeting of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College. Mr V. B. Locke, of Tylor’s. Ltd., Sydney, formerly of Christchurch, and Mr J. Shields, of the “Daily Tele- V graph,” Sydney, are at present on a holiday visit to Christchurch. Mr J. W. Collins, Secretary of Industries and Commerce, is to arrive from Wellington to-morrow, and will attend the annual meeting of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association the same evening. Last evening, at a meeting of the executive of the Canterbury Boys’ Cricket Association, a motion of deep sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr J. F. Peake was carried in silence. It was decided »to place on record theassociation’s appreciation of his great services to cricket in general and to the Boys’ Association in particular. The death of Mr J. C. Adams, a former member of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College, was referred to by the chairman (the Hon G. J. Smith) at a meeting of the board yesterday. Mr Smith spoke of the great work that Mr Adams had done for the College and also his fine influence in military camps. In the death of Mr Adams, the College had lost a real friend. Mr H. D. Acland said that in the death of Mr Adams, an honourable gentleman and a magnificent Christian had gone to his rest. A motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried by the board.
