SANDERS CUP

REDCLIFFS BOAT WINS FIRST TRIAL. There was a very fresh breeze for the first Sanders Cup trial at Lyttelton today. Heavy weather crews were carried. The course was laid fraom Gladstone Pier round the pile light, with a long beat to Ripa Island and run back, twice round. The competitors were:— Secret (Redcliffs)—F. Morrison (helm), I. Treleaven (spinnaker), F. Glanville and W. Floyd. Colleen (Lyttelton)—F. Collins (helm), F. Dobbie (spinnaker), C. Weakley and A. Sinclair. Usher (Lyttelton)—E. Sinclair (helm), K. Beaumont (spinnaker), H. May and A. Sinclair. The race started at 3 p.m. Secret and Usher carried spinnakers. Colleen rounded the pile light with a five lengths lead. Colleen and Secret held long tacks to Diamond Harbour, while Usher came about frequently, keeping towards Gladstone Pier. Secret was keeping to windward of Colleen, who broke the tacks first. Usher’s manoeuvre seemed to gain ground. The boats rounded the buoy off Ripa Island with Secret first at 3.42 p.m., Colleen at 3.43 p.m. and Usher at 3.45 p.m. On the run back Usher was very slow getting her spinnaker out. Colleen gained on Secret, but held her spinnakei too long, and had lost ten seconds of her lead at the pile light. Times — Secret 3.54.40 p.m., Colleen 3.55.25 p.m., Usher 3.59.40 pjn. On the beat back all made short boards to leeward and took a long lead for Ripa Island. Secret held the windward position from Colleen and Usher. She rounded first at 4hr 35min 35sec p.m., Colleen at 4hr 37min lOsec p.m. Usher was well back. Both the leaders hoisted spinnakers, but Colleen’s was twice taken aback. Running down Colleen was too far to leeward. Secret crossed the line the winner at 4hr 47min ssec p.m., and Collen at 4hr 48min 40sec p.m.
