BLAZE AT HOME OF PRINCESS MARY.

RAPID FIRE DESTROYS SIX RACEHORSES.

(Special to the ** Star.") LONDON, September 7. Six racehorses were burnt to death at Goldsbrough Hall, near Knaiesbo rough, the Yorkshire residence of Princess Mary and Viscount Lascelles, last night. A farm labourer in the village street saw smoke issuing from the stud stables in which the horses, six valuable young animals, had just been placed. The fire spreal rapidly, and the Harrogate Fire Brigade was immediately summoned. The flames, however, had a good hold and the stables were destroyed. The farm employees had no chance of rescuing the horses. Princess Mary and Lord Lascelles were not at the hall when the fire was discovered. A fire engine from Harrogate travelled the seven miles to Goldsborough in record time. The firemen found the estate brigade hard at work, water being obtained from a pond 350 yards from the fire. Of the six horses burned to death three were yearling fillies and three yearling colt foals. Two had been entered for the Oaks. An eye-witness said: “The flames were shooting into the air when people arrived. It was hopeless from the beginning to try to save the buildings. Attempts to rescue the horses were impossible on account of the heat. The stables are about 500 yards from the hall.”
