DOMINION TOUR BY SWIMMING CHAMPION.
WEISSMULLER ARRIVES AT AUCKLAND NEXT MONTH
The Council of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association decided last evening to proceed with the proposed tour of the Dominion by John Weissmuller, world’s champion sprint swimmer.
It was reported that immediately on the receipt of notification from Australia that a tour by Weissmuller could be arranged, the four main centres had been communicated with for the purpose of ascertaining whether guarantees would be forthcoming. All the centres had replied in the affirmative. In addition the Auckland centre had notified that Whangarei were anxious to arrange an appearance, while the Nelson centre had also telegraphed inquiring whether an appearance could be arranged there. Mr W. H. Benson said the undertaking of the tour would depend on what arrangements could be made. Weissmuller was due to arrive in Auckland on December 4. Wellington wanted an appearance on. December 15. It might be difficult to arrange the appearances on dates that would suit the centres concerned. The general opinion was that there would be no difficulty in arranging for appearances. There would probably be more applications than could be met. It might not be possible to arrange the appearances on the dates desired by the centres. It was decided to proceed with the tour, the details being referred to the Tours Committee.
