Two small fires shortly after seven o’clock engaged the attention of the Fire Brigade last night. The first, at 7.12 p.m., was at a lock-up shop, 431. Colombo Street, Sydenham, occupied by Mr Sydney Smith, of 33. Maxweli Street, Riccarton. A small fire was found under the counter in the centre of the shop. Damage amounting to about £IOO was caused. The contents were insured for £950 in the Sun Insurance Office. The second fire, which occurred at 7.19 p.m., was trifling, being in a cupboard at 333, Manchester Street. The occupier was Mrs V. Morrow. Apparently a piece of cinema film caught fire when a search was being made with a lighted candle.
