THIEF MAKES £loo HAUL.

HOUSE IN ST ALBANS ENTERED YESTERDAY.

Goods to the value of £IOO were stolen from the residence of Mrs A. Williams. 73. Cranford Street, between 2.45 and. 5.15 pm. yesterday. Mrs Williams left at 2.45 for Riccarton, locking the house up carefully before leaving. On her return, she found *he place thoroughly ransacked. Jewellery, including watches and rings, was the chief items taken. The thief also decamped with a small amount of money- and a good deal of men’s clothing. Most of the valuables were locked in a small deed box which was removed whole. The box also had in it many of Mrs Williams’s papers, and share certificates. Although these will be of no value to the thief, they will occasion the owner a good deal of trouble to replace. It is not known how the house was entered, but the thief apparently took his time in going through the house. Every room was in turn thoroughly searched, and the contents of cupboards and drawers were strewn over the floors. • A collection of coins which Mrs Williams owned included a few sovereigns. These were carefully sorted out from foreign gold coins and stolen. A decanter of whisky was wrapped up in paper but apparently forgotten, as it was left on a bed. No ladies’ clothing was taken, although there was plenty about. The exact value of the articles taken is not known, but Mrs Williams estimates her loss at over £IOO. The police are investigating.
