PAINLEVE CONFIRMS INTERVIEW WITH ENGLISH PRESSMAN.
PARIS, October 8. A message from Paris asserts that M. Painleve, Minister for War, confirms the interview which he gave the British United Press regarding the fortification of the Italian frontier, with he exception of the phrase “gun foi gun,” which was inadvertently attributed to him^—Australian Press .Asociation.
The “gun-for-gun” interview was repudiated a day or two after it was ;iven. The cabled version was: “With mr Italian neighbours hastening the ortification on their frontier, it is only ommonsensft that we keep up with hem. Italy began the race all the vay the Mediterranean to Mont 3lane. We will match them gun for :un. It is easier to defend than our rerman frontier. We realise the consequences of failure to keep up with taly.”
