RACING AND TROTTING NOTES

RACING NOTES.

Coughs are very prevalent at present among the horses in Riccarton stables.

Sir George Clifford's team for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting next week will consist of Childsplay, Prickles, Quarterdeck, and Impertinence. It is probable that Childsplay will be started only in the Dunedin Guineas.

It is orobable that Mr G. Gerard will have Silver Coot, Noteworthy and Amourette racing at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting next week.

A. E. Ellis will ride Count Cavour in the New Zealand Cup, while his lightweight brother, L. J. Ellis, has been encaged for Battle Colours. * * * *■

T. H. Gillett has not come to a definite decision regard the next engagements of Count Cavour and Money Order, but his present idea is not to send them south for the Dunedin meeting.

It is of interest to note that no handicap event at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s, meeting next week carries a stake involving the winner in a penalty for the New Zealand Cup. * * * «

An opportunity of getting a line regarding the relative merit of Australian and New Zealand two-year-olds will be available at Trentham this month, as Gold Tinge, the winner of the Breeders* Plate, has had his engagement cort tinued in the Wellesley Stakes.

Prince Humphrey has been nonrnat ed for the Harcourt Cup, the weight-for-age race at Trentham this month. Apparently this engagement was contracted before Mr C. G. Macindoe decided on a trip to Melbourne, to Mollison on again in the Victoria Derby.

Riccarton stables are well represent ed in the excellent list of nomination*, for the Wellington Racing Club’s springmeeting. Among the horses engaged are Count Cavour, Money Order, Ned Kelly, Amor, Rapier, Battle Colours Radiate, Hoy lake. Rotor, Silver Paper, Aspiring, Sudden Storm, Childsplay Full Feather, Upheaval. Stables further south claim Pink Note Ceieritv 11., Corinthia, Nedda, Solrose and Booster.

The Harcourt Cup, formerly known as the Champion Plate, the mile and a quarter weight-for-age race at Trentham this month, has drawn a very fin; list of nominations. Star Stranger Count Cavour, Rapier, The Kawk, Commendation, Beacon Eight and Celerity 11. make up a strong team of old horses, while Prince Humphrey, Staghunter, Childsplay, Silver Paper, Prodice and Concentrate should provide a good contingent of three-vear-olds.

The Wellington Racing Club is going ahead with the new stand in the outside enclosure, and the building, when completed, will be of similar outline to those in the paddock enclosure. A ramp in rear will lead up to the top seats, and there will be an ample terrace of concrete steps in front of the stand. Taken altogether the building will compare favourably with Trentham’s other assets, and will complete the equipment of what is no doubt the most up-to-date racecourse in this part of the world. The building of the stand will take about eighteen months to complete.

Mr T. Newman, of Nelson, the owner of Lady Desmond and March 11. (qnder O. Cox's care), was a. visitor to Hawera last week, and Lady Desmond's lameness was thoroughly investigated. It was decided to retire the mare from the race track, and she should prove a valuable acquisition to the matron’s paddock.

The Breeders’ Plate, the first two-year-old race of the season in New South Wales, has been won on several occasions by New Zealand owners. The late Mr G. G. Stead won the initial contest, in 1906, with Boniform, whose son, Almona, scored for«Mr G. L. Stead eleven years later. Mr E. J. Watt was successful with the Australian-bred filly Ventura, in 1911. while Mr G. D. Greenwood had a winning turn with Nincompoop in 1924. Mr G. J. Barton, who won yesterday with Gold Tinge, makes the fifth New Zealand winner. Prior to 1916 the Breeders’ Plate and tlte Girhcrack Stakes (on the third day) were both open to colts, geldings and fillies, but in view of the large fields, the Breeders’ Plate was restricted to colts and geldings, the Gimcrack Stakes being reserved for fillies.

| It is reported from Trentham that the Paper Money two-year-old Franco- ! lin will go to Dunedin, and run in the M’Lean Stakes next week. H. Telford will not make the trip, as he will have most of his team at Carterton. Francolin will go down in charge of G. Williams. B. H. Morris has been engaged for the ride.

F. Davis is at Ellerslie with the two-year-old filly Clever. The hock ailment that prevented her from starting at Avondale lias greatly improved, and she will be quite herself again when the Auckland Welcome Stakes comes, up for decision on Saturday. Clever is bv- Psychology from Miss Cute, an imported mare by Charles O'Malley.

Supremacy, the winner of the Avondale Stakes, comes of a successful and speedy family. The first of the Chief Rulers raced last season and they all showed speed, notable amongst them being Silver Rule and JuSt So. Supremacy s dam Lucella is by Lucullus from Seatonella, by Seaton Delaval. Seatonella is the dam to Marble Arch of Arch Marella and Statuette, and to Penury of Penella. Arch Marella proved himself a first-class colt, one of his races being to run Eurythmic to half a length in the Sydney Cup of 1921. Statuette was a really highclass sprinter, amongst her victories being the Auckland Railway Handicap of 1920. Penella is the dam of Flying Juliet, a good sprinter in the Auckland district. From all points of view therefore Supremacy is the makings of a really good two-year-old, and all who witnessed his Avondale victoryare of the opinion that it will take something out of the ordinary to lower his colours.

The success of the two-year-old Gold Tinge in the Breeders’ Plate, at the Australian Jockey Club’s meeting yesterday, will be hailed with delight in many parts of New Zealand. His owner, Mr G. J. Barton, is a resident of Dunedin, and he has been in the racing game for several years, though he has not been nearly so prominent as in the trotting sport, in which he is one of the Dominion’s biggest owners. Gold Tinge was bred by Mr I. G. Duncan, and he was purchased by Mr Barton for 250 guineas at the Trentham sales in January. He is by Paper Money from Vicereine, by Birkenhead from Roie, a daughter of the Robinson Crusoe mare, Hippona, whose son, St Hippo, was a New Zealand and Auckland Cup winner. The youngster is trained by S. G. Ware, who had ii's team at Washdyke during the winter. Gold Tinge was taken to Wingatui for the Otago Hunt meeting last month and was given a run in the two-year old parade, in which he created a veryfavourable impression, this being the performance which decided his connections on the trip to Sydney-, which has turned out so well. Gold Tinge is expected to return to the Dominion immediately and he will provide a lot of interest in important two-year-old events later in the season.

Although M. M’Carten was successful in having the term of his disqualification reduced from three months to one month, the penalty has proved a heavy one, as he was engaged to ride Jocelyn in the Metropolitan Handicap, which she won yesterday.

An idea prevails in some quarters in New Zealand that a failure or near failure on Dominion racecourses might prove a profitable proposition “at the ponies” in Australia. From experience, this idea is quite erroneous. The pony meetings in Sydney- cater for the diminutive horses as well as all-heights, and in most of the better class races it. takes a smart galloper to score. Second and third divisions of maiden handicaps may not be- so difficult. For instance, a five-year-old Greenstead gelding Merton, who won a Flying Handicap recently at Victoria Park with 8.7 in Imin 14.jsec, would be good enough for any average open sprint companyin New Zealand. Southern Cross, who carried 8.2 in this event, is known to New Zealanders as Covent Garden. Merton treated him like a common hack. Probably the smartest real pony in and around Sydney at present is Little Lady, a solidly built brown mare by Pacolet from Lady Mascot. On the same day- that Merton scored she carried 9.3 and won over four furlongs and a quarter in 56sec. As she is only- 14.1 hands and gave an inch away in height to the opposition as well as weight all round, the merit of her performance can be- understood. Unfortunately her win, was not exactly popular, for a week earlier in her own class—l4.l—with 11.7 and a 7.9 minimum she finished last.

Last year the Paper Money—lllume pony Flicker ran some fine races amongst the two-y-ear-olds in New Zealand, and in Australia she has now scored twice in three- starts. Recently-, with 9.0 she was produced in the first division of a 14.1 handicap of 51 furlongs. The bookmakers opened very cautiously with her, but no support being apparently- forthcoming she went out in the betting to reasonable odds. Then a flood of cash came and she finished up a good favourite. From No. 5 at the barrier she was always well placed, and ridden right out at the finish she won by- a neck in the record time for the track of Imin 6sec, the previous best having stood to the credit Of that crack pony Precious Dust, Imin 6ssec, since 1920. As the last furlong at Kensington is up a very- decided rise, Flicker’s finishing effort suggested further successes for her. It is to be regretted that she is not of slightly greater stature, for then she would hold her own amongst the registered brigade. Flicker is trained at Randwick by F. M'Grath, who has one of the Epsom favourites, Amounis, in liis stable.

The ex-New Zealand trainer Maurice M’Grath, who trains Kalloni, the medium of two very successful plunges in Sydney during the early spring campaign, tells a good story of how he escaped from an awkward position at Randwick. Kalloni has one malformed forefoot which causes him to move verycramped for a few- paces after he has been standing in a stall or a box. At Randwick at Tattersall’s Meeting just prior to the race in which Kalloni was being backed for a fortune, M’Grath in the horse’s stall noticed a Melbourne professional racegoer waiting for him. Just at the time he did not w-ish to have to discuss the horse with outsiders, so staved in the box. The “Go to the post” bell sounded, and M'Grath had to send the horse in to the birdcage. Kalloni obliged by being more sore than usual. He almost fell on his nose at the first step, and just hobbled out of the stall. The “head” took one look, satisfied all w-as not well, and went away to find a freer goer. By the time he was out of sight Kalloni was stepping out with the best. What the punter's feelings were when Kalloni spreadeagled the field can be imagined. In passing, it might be said that rumours were so rife about the identity of Kalloni that the stewards of the Australian Jockey Club made a formal inspection. The horse, formerly trained at Randwick. showed such a vast improvement after his spell and training in Victoria that this was the origin of the wild stories. -

Jocelyn, who won the Metropolitan Handicap at the Australian Jockey Club's meeting yesterday,- is trained by the ex-New Zealander, George Price. She was bred by her owner, being by Rossendale, who is building up a great reputation as a sire of stayers. Her clam, Maltine, is a Maltster mare, who won the Metropolitan Handicap for Mr B run ton nineteen years ago. Jocelyn started six times as a two-year-old, winning the Easter Stakes at the Australian Jockey Club’s autumn meeting Her only success last season was in an unimportant mile race at Warwick Farm, but she was second to Limerick in the Rawson Stakes, nine furlongs, beating Amounis by a head and second, to Winalot in the St Leger. Jocelyn has had several races this season, showing attractive form, and she was favourite for the Metropolitan Handicap during the last few weeks. * * * * * The Wellington owner, Mr R. J. Murphy-, had an unlucky experience at the Australian Jockey Club’s meeting yesterday, when Oratrix ran second in the Metropolitan Handicap. Oratrix is bred on sound staying lines, as she is by Kilbroney, a stayer, and a sire of stamina, while her dam, Oratress, is a New Zealand Cup winner by Demosthenes. Oratrix won several races its the Dominion last season but her best performance was her third to Hynanna and Lady Desmond in the Great Autumn Handicap. She is engaged in the New Zealand Cup with 7.1, and her Australian performance, with 101 b more on her back, will bring her into prominence for the two-mile race at Riccarton. She has good staying credentials and with her light weight she will be very hard to beat. TROTTING NOTES. Norman Burgess deserves a lot of credit for the manner in which he has improved the pacer Hackthorne. The brother to Great Hope showed a lot of speed as a two-year-old and he finished second to Taurekareka in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes in June, 1923. Since that time he has raced a good deal but has never shown much improvement. A few months ago he was leased by- N. Burgess who, discovering a splint, had it removed, and Hackthorne is now hitting out boldlv in his work. He was responsible for a couple of good performances at the recent New Brighton meeting, and he is working satisfactorily in training, both in saddle and harness. He seems to be remaining sound. It now seems certain that it was splint troubles that caused his previous indifferent performances.

Cannonball has been turned out, and this brilliant trotter is not likely to be raced again for some time.

Owing to Mr C. E. Lindsay's accident, the Cup horse Talaro and the pacer Sonoma Star are in F. Holmes’s stable. The three-year-old Spnoma Child and his brother, Harvest Child, are in charge of F. G. Holmes, who will take them to Auckland this week.

J. J. Kennerley will leave on Saturday-, with Fight Ever and Jackie Audubon, for Auckland, where they- will be racing next week.

A nice work-out over a mile wav. recorded at Auckland on Friday, when Jewel Pointer, Native Prince and Western King were strapped up. At the jump off Jewel Pointer had over n length the best of Native Prince, with Western King a couple of lengths away. Jewel Pointer bowled along in *ront, but at the end of three furlongs he left his feet. However, he was soon down again, and took up the running. Over the last furlong. Native Prince and Western King closed on him, and ther c was little between the trio at the end, all going comfortably-.

Unless Nihilist Junior shows remarkable improvement upon his track efforts since he was brought to Auck land, H. Kinnamont is going to have difficulty in getting even cigarette money with the chestnut, says a north ern writer. Whenever he has been asked to go any- pace m harness, he has given a poor display-, and one day last week he was tried in saddle. In the south he went some good races with the weight on top, but it was an inglorious effort he was responsible for y*esterday-. The trotter Roma Bingen and the maiden pacer Chfystal wercworked out a mile and a half with Nihilist Junior, who was supposed to go with them. He did not hit his straps at the start, and lost about 30vds, but even so, he should have at least got to his companions, who are moderates. However, Nihilist Junior, despite the fact that he was ridden hard, actuallylost ground over the final half-mile, an.’ it was far from an impressive effort.

RICCARTON NOTES. Tuesday*. The weather was hot during training hours this morning. All the fast work was done on the number seven track, which was in great order for making time. A lot of interesting work was accomplished, but without anything of a sensational character. Polydectes opened proceedings by sprinting three furlongs in 36 3-ssec. Prickles galloped a mile in Imin 40 3-5 sec, Wild Work going with her for the last six furlongs. They were both doing their best at the end of a smart gallop, Childsplay covered six furlongs in Imin 15sec, going freely all the way. Honour and Jaleux sprinted three furlongs in 36 4-ssec. Noteworthy dashed over five furlongs in Imin 2sec, showing a lot of brilliancy. Footfall and Starshooter were companions over seven furlongs. They ran the first half mile in 50 l-ssec, and finished up their task on terms in Imin 29 4-ssec. Philippic and Pride reeled off six furlongs in Imin 14sec, Philippic being a neck in front at. the finish. Paper Boy occupied Imin 6sec over an easy five furlongs. Full Feather and Quarterdeck were together at the end of seven furlongs, ran in Imin 31 4-ssec. Paperchase covered six furlongs in Imin Msec, an attractive gallop. Rapier and Battle Colours were companions over six furlongs, which occupied Imin 17sec, but they were going comfortably at the end. Hoylake galloped seven furlongs alone in Imin 31 l-ssec. He seemed disinclined to go on to the track. Honeycomb dashed over five furlongs attractively in Imin 2 l-ssec. Stately- sprinted half a mile in 50 1-5 sec and did it well. Sarnia and Rotor were going comfortably all through a six furlong spin, which occupied Imin 17 2-ssec. Chide and Quaecee ran six furlongs in Imin 15 l-ssec, finishing together. After breakfast Money Order sprinted half a mile in 49 3-ssec, doing the last three in 36sec. Desert Song and Comique took 39sec for three furlongs, but they were going easily-. Radiate and Ned Kelly- covered six

furong-s in Imin 17 keeping close company all the way-. Count Cavour galloped a mile, Amor accompanying him for the last half of the journey. He occupied 26min for the first two furlongs and Imin 4 4-ssec for five, while the mile was run in Imin 42 3-ssec. Amor finished half a length in front, after doing the last three furlongs in 37 4-ssec. Netley, Arrowhead and Lovedart occupied 52 l-seec for an easy half mile. The Viscount and Corsetiere ran five furlongs in Imin 2 2-ssec, finishing together. A large number of other horses did useful pace work. ELLERSLIE GALLOPS. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, October 2. The weather was fine, though dull, for training at Ellerslie. The No. I grass track was available for fast work, and the going was good. Before breakfast, Catkin ran half a mile in 53 l-ssec. King Emerald, picked up by Gold Money- at the six-furlong post, ran a round in 2min lsec, the last six being run in Imin 24 2-ssec. Sir Archie went a round in Imin 58 sec. Mask, Yalkon, Mint Leaf and Star Stranger were companions over a round. Star Stranger was last in the early stages, but came through on the straight, and was just in front of the other trio at the finish of the round, run in Imin 52 3-asec, the last mile being run in Imin 43 2-ssec. Star Stranger pleased greatly-. Episode was too good for Lysander and Vi\»o over six furlongs in imin 18 sec. Benzora and Nancy Lee, from a mov ing start, ran four furlongs in 49 4-ssee. Ohinemuri and a companion ran five furlongs in Imin 7sec. Corinax and Bombarder covered six furlongs in Imin 19 3-ssec, Cashier alone taking Imin 22sec. High Falutin’ and Royal Lineage ran six furlongs in Imin 18 2-ssec. Kaiti went three furlongs in 39see. Metellus covered six furlongs in Imin 22 3-ssec. Laughing Prince went a round in Imin 51 4-ssec, moving nicely through out. Freehold covered five furlongs in Imin 7 4-ssec. MASTERTON MEETING. (Special to the “Star.”) MASTERTON, October 2.
