TRAMWAY BOARD DOES WELL OUT OF AIRMEN’S VISIT.

PORTION OF RECEIPTS GIVEN TO UNEMPLOYED The ;Christchurch Tramway Board met yesterday; present, Mr J. Wood (chairman), Mrs E. R. M'Combs. Messrs W. Hayward, 11. Pearce, D. Sykes, E. H. Andrews, J. A. Flesher, W. Williamson and W. J. Walter. SOUTHERN' CROSS TRAFFIC. Mr F. Thompson, general manager, announced that on the day of the arrival of the aeroplane Southern Cross £391 7s had been taken on the Riccarton line, and £lO7 5s had been handed to the Unemployment Committee. On the day of the Southern Cross’s departure £258 12s had been taken, of which £7l 19s had been handed to the committee. Thus £179 4s had been handed to the committee, and the board had retained £470 15s. NORTH BEACH. A letter was received fcrom the district engineer of the Public Works Department, stating that the North Beach line was in such a condition that trams could use it provided that they did not exceed a speed of twenty miles per hour. Owing to the light nature of the line, frequent inspection and maintenance would be necessary. A letter from the Waimairi County Council expressed that body's appreciation of the board’s decision to reopen the North. Beach line. “It’s wonderful that someone appreciates a decision of the board,’’ remarked a member. “That council is a very live bodjV’ said Mr W. J. Walter, with a smile. An invitation was received from a committee of North Beach residents for the board members to attend a social gathering to mark the opening of the North Beach line. The invitation was accepted.

LINES IN CATHEDRAL SQUARE. A letter from the city engineer, asking that the board should improve the tram tracks in Cathedral Square, so as to keep them in accordance with the Square improvement scheme, was referred to the Works and Traffic Committee. HOLDING UP TRAMS. The Riccarton Borough Council and the Waimairi County Council wrote stating that their respective traffic inspectors had been instructed not to hold trams at intersection*, except where absolutely necessary. REPLACEMENT OF PLANT. The following motion was carried, “Pursuant to the provisions of the Christchurch Tramway District Act, 1920, the Christchurch Tramway Board hereby calls upon the Christchurch Tramway Depreciation Fund Commissioners to provide the sum of £50,000 required for the purpose of replacing plant and works which in its opinion are worn out in whole or part and which arc incapable of further profitable use to the board.’’ FARES. Jhe Works and Traffic Committee reported: “No. 10 line will be re-opened to ■ Ozone Corner on October 1 next. The fares from the city will be: Weekdays 4d, Sundays sd, children 2d, school tickets (45 rides) 4s fid, apprentice tickets (45 rides) Ss 6d, as previously. The fare sections will be Burwood, Bosnian's, Racecourse Road, Ozone Corner. Single sections 2d, two sections 2*d, three sections 3sd. Notice of motion was given by-Mrs M’Combs; “That the fares decided upon in connection with the North Beach line be applied to the whole tramway system, and that the maximum fare decided upon in connection with the North Beach line be the maximum fare charged on any section.’’ ACCIDENTS. During August the following accidents were reported: Collisions with motor-cars, 12; collisions with motorcycles 1: collisions with other motor vehicles, 2; collisions with pedestrians, 2; alighting from car in motion, 4; collisions with cyclists, 3: passengers falling off car, 2; miscellaneous, l; total, 27
