J By Special Correspondent of the ** Star.* §

GOOD TEMPLARS. The usual weekly meeting of the Sumner Good Templars was held on Wednesday, C.T. Sister B. Sexton presiding. The C.T. was given a warm welcome after her indisposition, and two new candidates were initiated. Bros Rennie, G.S.E.W., and G. Bachause, L.D., were present. The programme consisted of questions on the lodge work, Bros Rennie and Bachause acting as judges. The prize winners were Sister V. De Villiers and Bro A. Wilson. GOLF. The final of the club senior championship resulted in a win for J. D. Lawrence, jun., who defeated F. J. Glackin 13 up and 11 to play. The junior event was won by R. Xewburgh, who defeated E. L. Young 6 up and 5 to play. The foursome competition on Thursday for Mrs C. H. Hamilton’s trophy resulted as follows: Mrs F. J. Glackin and Mrs T. Newburgh 103-23-80; Mrs V- E. Hamilton and Mrs H. Y. Widdowson scoring 103-20-83. SUMNER DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL. Last week-end the pupils of the secondary department held their annual tourney with those of the Akaroa District High School. The events took place at Akaroa. The tennis resulted in a victory for Sumner by 79 games to 67. At football the home team scored 35 to 0, the visitors being far too light. Basketball provided a keen contest, the Akaroa players winning by 18-10. CHILDREN’S PARTY.

The first children’s fancy dress party was held by the Catholic community of Sumner and Redcliffs last week-end. This was followed by a social in the evening for adults. The junior event proved most enjoyable, the children thoroughly entering into the spirit of the occasion. The evening was devoted to dancing and competitions, with a programme of items interspersed. RIFLE SHOOTING. After the lapse of a year or two, the local Ladies’ Miniature Rifle Club proved strong enough to provide a team for this year’s inter-borough match with New Brighton. The event took place at Brighton on Thursday evening, the Sumner team consistsing of Misses C. Bamford, P. Ellis, B. Ellis, I*. Vaughan, V. Jones, M. Whitfield, F. Allen and I. Merry. The home team scored a victory by a margin of 13 points. A very pleasant evening was wound up with supper, during which Miss Muriel Whitfield, of the SumnerRedcliffs Club, was presented by the Brighton members with a handsome box of chocolate for her score of 68. CROQUET CLUB. Mr H. J. Williams, the president of the Croquet Chib, presided over a meeting of the comipittee this week.

j It was decided to hold a tournamen ■ once a fortnight; also that entries for the Slater Cup and Black Rose Bowl be called for early and closed by October 27. Mr T. F. Chambers stated that the New Zealand Croquet Council was presenting silver buttons for competition amongst affiliat< d clubs. The competition was to be divided into three grades, and details would be announced by the Canterbury Croquet Association secretary at an early date. Mrs Hudson Brown was elected club captain for the ensuing year. PERSONAL. . The late Mrs Mills, of Head Street, had a great many friend in Sumner, her residence here having extended over a very long period of years. She took a very keen interest in the work of All Saints Church and supported it loyally. Her death at the age of 84 has removed a well-known figure and left many to mourn the loss they have sustained. On Thursday afternoon a short service was held in All Saints Church before the burial at the Bromley Cemetery- The Rev E. C. W. Powell officiated, the organ music being “I Know that My Redeemer Liveth” and Chopin’s "Marche Funibre.” MISCELLANEOUS. Although the pier does not show any improvement, the sag being worse if anything, the beautifying work nearby is making good progress. The plots are completed as far as filling is concerned, .and planting is to be undertaken as soon as possible. The widening at the toe of "The Spur,” Clifton, is being pushed along. The old quarry at the back of the destructor is being brought into xise, a large number of shots having been fired this week. The programme at the District High School fancy dress dances owed a good good deal to the item contributed by Miss Selby’s pupils, who gave a very attractive Dutch dance. An interesting item on Thursday was the presentation immediately before their departure, of two beautiful model aeroplanes to Squadron-Leader Kingsford Smith and Flight-Lieutenant C. T. P. Ulm by Miss Hyde, of the Esplanade. Under the auspices of the New Zealand Alliance, the Hon Crawford Vaughan, ex-Premier of South Australia, addressed a small audience in the Sumner Town Hall on Wednesday evening. He dealt with the Prohibition : question, quoting figures in support of his statements. REDCLIFFS NOTES. The Redcliffs School is almost finished. It has been repainted and in its new form and situation looks very attractive. The official opening has been fixed for next Saturday evening. The work, lately, has been in the hands of the Canterbury Education • Board and reflects great credit upon the staff.
