ELECTRIC METER STRUCK BY FLASH.
CHILDREN LUCKY TO MISS OCCURRENCE. Per Press Association. WANGANUI. September 28. Patea was visited by a severe thunder storm and hailstorm on Tuesday. Vivid flashes of lightning and very large hailstones startled many residents. It was very fortunate that the storm took place before the children bad left for school, for an electric meter in tho assembly hall at the local school was struck by lightning and demolished, fragments being hurled nearly 100 feet down the hall. The conduit was twisted and the flag in one room was struck. A remarkable fact was the way in which copper and porcelain were burnt in one mass. If the children had been at school, they would undoubted!/ have had a very terrifying experience. The borough electrical engineer, who was in charge of the Diesel plant at the time of the storm, says that he heard a violent report at the back of the switchboard, but found that no damage had been done. The local telegraph department also was seriously affected, no fewer than 50 telephones being put out of commission.
