POLICE CAPTAIN UNDER ARREST.

CORRUPTION CHARGE LEADS TO STARTLING AFFAIR AT CITY HALL. (United Press Assn By Electric Telegrraph.—Copyright.) (Received September 28, 2 p.m.) PHILADELPHIA, September 27. A most sensational development of the Grand Jury investigation into bootlegging and gang warfare came when an allegation of police corruption was made at midnight with the arrest of a police captain and twenty-two policemen on charges of extortion, bribery, and corruption. Among the prisoners are seven sergeants and two City Hall detectives. The police captain is Charles Cohen. The prisoners were taken into custody outside the office of District Attorney Monaghan, where they were under examination for four hours. All have been placed in cells in the City Hall to await a hearing before Judge Lewis who ordered the investigation. Two other police captains and half a dozen city detectives, also Mr Matthew Patterson, ward leader for the Republican organisation and member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, have been arrested.—United Service.
