MUNICIPAL THEATRE.
“ CHANG.”
What is “Chang”? Where is “Chang”? These are questions being asked in Christchurch to-day, and they call for an answer. “Chang” means ? Never mind what it means, for the moment; let us hear what it is. Before the most ancient civilisation arose, before the first city in the world was built, before man trod the earth—then, as now, there stretched across vast spaces of farther Asia a great, green, threatening mass of vegetation—the jungle. Then, as now. man hacked his way in the jungle, defying nature, braving the dangers of the wild beasts. Time and again, fields, towns, great empires were hacked out of the jungle. They are forgotten. Always the jungle
rose in wrath and swallowed thero. Such is the tale of “Chang.” A story of man's fight for existence, a fight that is life itself, stark, real, almost unbelievable. The little clearing becomes a home, the leasts are beaten off or killed., and then comes peace. For a day —perhaps a month—perhaps a yea: ? But not for long. Man is the intruder fighting in the jungle. From the beginning until the end of time it stretches—the unconquered, the unconquerable. Such is “Chang.” Every portion of the picture was taken in Siam. It has never been near Hollywood. A special musical score was composed for the opening in New York and London, and this music will be played in Christchurch by an augmented Orchestra under the direction of Mr Arthur Lilley. Mr Lilley will have associated with him the following players: —Miss Leila Denby, Messrs Vere Buchanan, W. Nicol, W. Hay, S. E. Munday, R. Ohlsen and S. Wells, Miss Marjorie Chapman and Messrs A. P. de la Cour and H. M. Williams. As a compliment to an erstwhile Christchurch resident and musician, Mr Lilley and the members of the orchestra have asked Mr Gladstone Hill to conduct the orchestra in the overture, “William Tell.” The box plan is now open at The Bristol. The management announce that 210 one shilling seats will be available each night.
