ST ANNE’S GUILD REPORTS GOOD YEAR.
The eighth report and balance-sheet of the St Anne's Guild Society will be presented .at the annual meeting to be held on September 28. The report states that the assistance of a large number of friends had not only enabled the home to continue its good work, but had made it possible to extend its usefulness, and so strengthen its foundation. Perhaps the outstanding event of the year was the visit of Lady Alice Fergusson, who came privately and inspected the home and the girls, and showed a very sympathetic interest with their individual doings and with the work in general. She was good enough to come again and give an address to the society’s friends and supporters on the Borstal Institutions. Lady Rhodes had added to the many kindnesses she had shown the society by making it her special aim to collect enough money to wipe off the debt they owed the Church Property Trustees. She was entirely successful in collecting the sura required, which amounted to £153 10s. The home was now free of debt to the Church Property Trustees. Mrs Burden, who some years ago helped the society in its extensions, offered a gift of £SO towards building a new chapel, and already had promised a further £55 from her friends, amongst whom she was collecting for this purpose. A gift of a stained glass window had also been promised. The society had been informed by the Public Trust Office that through the will of the late Mrs Sandry they were to receive £SO. The Girl Guide Company still had a wonderful influence over the girls. Thanks were due to Miss Biltcliff for the thorough manner in which she had trained the girls, and the society very much regretted that she would be unable to continue her work. Miss Millicent Jennings had been most kind in giving an evening a week of her valuable time to training the girls in singing. She had had wonderful results, and the girls were able to give a delightful little concert in the winter, singing quaint rounds and rhymes in French. Miss Wilkinson gave of her time teaching the girls dancing. Mi :s Zeller had helped the girls very considerably with her art classes. Peppier very kindly came for a.-. months to give them a literary evening a week. The report states that the guild branches at Ashburton, Temuka, Akaroa, Courtenay, Amberley, Little River, H or orate Wainui, Dallingtcs. Fernside, also Mrs Buchanan’s Guild of Help held gift days of their own, and Cust and West Eyreton collected almost enough jam to last through the year. Throughout Canterbury, Mothers' Unions and branches of the guild had tendered their financial aid and shown their goodwill in many other ways. In many cases the Mothers’ Unions adopted the St Anne’s Pound Day as m means of obtaining the necessary fund# and gifts in kind.
