N.Z. GIRL CAPTIVE OF CHINESE BANDIT GANG WAS RECENTLY A VISITOR TO CHRISTCHURCH.
(United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) LONDON, September 24. Miss Blanche Tobin, who has been taken prisoner by Chinese bandits be tween Canton and Kweilin, is a New Zealander. She is a member of the Church of England Zenana Mission, and was lately on furlough in New Zealand. lough from her mission station, which had been granted as a result of the disturbed state of China some eighteen months ago. About two months ago she received a cable from the bishop of the Chinese diocese in which .she worked requesting her return. She left Christchurch about seven weeks ago. Miss Tobin was reared on Motiti Island (Bay of Plenty), and until her departure on mission work had spent practically all her life among the Maoris. She was educated in Auckland. where she graduated M.A. For some time she was on the teaching staff of the Maori Girls’ College in Auckland.
