The death is reported from Melbourne of Mr J. O. Hayward, a wellknown racehorse owner. He had resided in the Wairarapa for sixty years and was associated with the early history of racing in the Wairarapa and Wellington*, first as a jockey, then as a trainer and owner. Among the winners trained by Mr Hayward were such performers as Balrownie, Southern Chief, Guide, Kakapa, Orphan, Senorita, Gentle Annie, Konini and Danebury. The marvellous knowledge and uncanny judgment which Mr Hayward showed in everything connected with the thoroughbred is particularly exemplified in his choice of sires, which he brought to the Wairarapa. Among them were Southern Chief, Barbarian, Blair Athol, Danebury, Remington, Tim Whiffler, Voltiguer, Derrington, Ascot, Saracen and the imported horse Lucullus, while he imported from England Soult, Gold Reef. Lucullus and Merrie Moment and the brood mares Merry Nif and Petitor. For his services in connection with racing, Mr Hayward was in 1877 elected a life member of the Wairarapa Jockey Club.
