CHATHAM CUP FINAL. (Special to the “ Star.”) WELLINGTON, August 25. •’the final of the Chatham Cup between Northern (Dunedin) and Petono (Wellington) was played to-day in fine weather. After the recent heavy rain the ground was on the slow side. There was an attendance of 4000. including the Prime Minister, Mr Coates, and several members of the Cabinet, petone played with the advantage of the wind in the first Spell, hut it was Northern who did the attacking in the opening stages, the forwards engaging in some nice passing movements. Petone's solid defence stood them in good stead and the Northern team found themselves up against a big obstacle. After five minutes Petone set. up a strong attack but Cameron put the hall over the bar when in a good position. Soon afterwards Leslie sent in a great shot, which skimmed tho crossbar. Northern attacked strongly and Petone were fortunate to avert a goal, Ruddiman missing badly whew presented with an open goal. Then Petono broke away and Fa.rquha.r sent m a. brilliant shot, which was deflected off Secular, the Northern left hack, and found the goal. Petone J, Northern 0. There was little between tho teams during th*e. remainder of the first, spell and both sides had their share of the play. Just before the end M'Lean, tho Northern left wing, sent in a great shot, which had M’Lean well beaten, but the ball struck the crossbar and rebounded into play. The spell (ended with the score: Petone 1, Northern 0. Tho final score was: PETONE 1 NORTHERN 0
