SOVIET ANTICIPATED BRITISH DESIRE.
HAVE PRESERVED BELONGINGS OF L 55 SUBMARINE VICTIMS. (United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Received August 23, 11.30 a.m.) MOSCOW, August 22. It is officially stated in the reply to the British report that the Soviet had not replied to the British Government’s request for permission to remove the L 55 bodies to England for burial, that “expecting the British Government would wish to transfer to the Motherland the L 55 bodies, the Soviet authorities from the very beginning took appropriate measures and were careful to preserve the personal belongings of the victims in order to hand them over to their relatives.” The British Government has inquired through the Norwegian Mission into the possibility of sending a warship to transfer the L 55 bodies to England. The Norwegian Government was informed that the Soviet did not object to the arrival of a warship belonging to a friendly nation, or a British merchantman, but could not consent to a British warship entering Soviet territorial waters.—Australian Press Association.
