Mrs IT. E. Kennett is spending a holiday at Kaikoura. Nurse Rolton, who has been under treatment at Christchurch Hospital, has returned to North Canterbury. Mr and Mrs G. E. Mannering have returned to Christchurch from the West Coast. Miss C. Chapman, Wellington, is the guest of Mrs C. J. Ronaldson, Papanui Road. Mrs Cecil Wood, Armagh Street West, is leaving this week for a visit to W ellington. Professor and Mrs Florance (Wellington) arrived in Christchurch yesterday and arc staying at Warwick House. Sir Louis and Lady Barnett and Dr and Mrs Barnett (Dunedin) are visiting Christchurch, and are staying at Warwick House. Mr and *Mrs E. F. Shand (Kaponga), Mrs R. B. Bell (Timaru) and Mrs AM. Nicholson (Timaru) are staying at the United Service Hotel. Mrs J. ITay and Mrs K. Turner (Auckland). Mr and Mrs Cassels (Dunedin'. Mrs S. Douglas (Ethelton) and Mrs Macfarlane (Culverden) are at Warner's Hotel. Mrs Richard Anderson and Mrs M’KilTop will leave this week for Wellington to attend the Plunkct Society Conference. Invitations have been issued for the ninth annual ball of Messrs Bradley Bros., Ltd., which is to take place in Dixieland on August 30. Mrs J. Cracrolt Wilson, Cashmere, will leave at the end of the week to attend the annual conference of the Plunket Society in Wellington. Air and Mrs A. E. Flower (Christ’s College) are. going early next week to spend the holidays at their house at Scarborough, Sumner. The Rev E. C. Crosse and Mrs Crosse (Christ's College), who have been visiting England, left Vancouver yesterday in the Aorangi on their return to Christchurch. The Hospital Board yesterday decided to send its congratulations to twelve j nurses on the staff who were successful in passing the State examination. Five passed with honours, and two completed their pass. Recent arrivals at ..the Hotel Federal include: Mr A. C. Tressider (.Wellington*, Mr A. Kerr (XapierO, Mr and Mrs G. Knowles (Oamaru), Mr* and Mrs Read (Cheviot), Mr B. Withell (Ealing).

Sister Turnbull and Staff Nurse Hopkins have resigned from the staff of the Upper Sanatorium. Misses N. Congreve and L. Exley, both of Christchurch. have been appointed to fill the vacancies.

In the Wellington competitions this ] week, a local pianiste. Miss Marjorie : Alexander, has been successful in gaining first prize in piano solo, fourteen and under sixteen, and second in piano : solo, any age. Iler numbers were: “Waltz" by Maurice Besley, and “Moments Musicals No. 6” (Schubert). Misses Maberlcy Beadel, Barbara Gould, and Kathleen Rristed. members of the Christchurch Ladies’ Golf Club, intend competing at the New Zealand Ladies’ Golf Championship meeting, in Auckland, beginning on September 27. Miss Dorothy Chrystall, who recently returned from England, and is at present in Auckland, will also take part in the tournament. Bowls of foliage and bright spring flowers decorated the reception room at the Canterbury Women’s Club last evening when a ■well-attended bridge partv was held. Mrs Murray Hobbs and Mrs Parrott, were the hostesses and received the guests. Many enjoyable games were played. A dainty supper was served and a vote of thanks was passed to the hostesses for the delightful evening. The North Brighton United Band of Hope held a meeting in the Peace Memorial Hall on Tuesday evening, Mr R. Parker presiding. Pianoforte solos were contributed by Mrs Philpott and Miss Jean Florance, a. musical monologue by Miss Pearl Noonan, a song by Miss Kathleen Instone and recitations by Master Andrew' Cook and Miss K. Instone. An address was given by Mr D. N. Adams. The monthly meeting of the Spreydon branch of the W.C.T.U. was held in the Baptist School room on Tuesday, Mrs Nairn presiding. Mrs Voss read an interesting paper on New Zealand women and the liquor traffic, written by a ladv doctor. Everything left from the recent cake stall was sold, the result being very satisfactory. A vote of thanks ! to all who kindly helped in the effort was passed with enthusiasm. On the occasion of .the break-up of the Redcliffs School Mrs Anderson, who has been appointed as infant mistress of the Linwood Avenue school, was presented by the pupils and staff with a case containing a fountain pen and an Eversharp pencil, also a thermos flask and two books. Regret was exI pressed at the loss of Mrs Anderson, | but good wishes for her future were ex ■ pressed with hearty cheers. At the Linwood Methodist Church Hall on Tuesday a recital entitled “ The Passing of the Third Floor Back ” was given by the Rev D. Gardner Miller, and was much appreciated by the large attendance. Musical items were rendered by Miss Mavis With all (pianoforte solo l . Mr T. Woods (solo), Messrs A. and R. Sharp and the Rev 11. Sharp (instrumental trio). Master Bennett and Mr Malcolm Rickard (recitations). A dialogue was given by Misses M. Cox and N. Rogatski. Mr Hoskins was the accompanist.
