TILDEN INCURS DISPLEASURE OF TENNIS WRITERS.

WILL NOT APPEAR AT HEARING OF CHARGE. (United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Received August 23, 10.15 a.m.) NEW YORK, August 22. Tilden has sent a letter to the United States Law'n Tennis Association, stating that he will be unable to appear in person at the hearing of the charge of professionalism on August 24, and that he never intentionally violated the amateur writer rule. He says that his articles ‘ were editorial and commentative, that any violation was only a technicality, that he had made great personal and monetary sacrifices to aid the American Davis Cup team this year, that he/ was ready to agree that be receive no compensation for the Wimbledon articles in question, and asking that ‘‘something should be done to clarify and accurately to define the rights of a player under the -playerwriter rule.”

A . distinctly, unfavourable impression has been caused by Tilden's decision not to appear in person before the hearing. It had been hoped that the entire position of American tennis w’ouM be clarified at the open hearing, where, face to face, a discussion between the so-called conservative and liberal elements of tennis officialdom would help this sport over the dangerous transition period. Tennis writers are particularly bitter over Tilden’s action, and some of them are asking: “Has he turned tail and is fleeing?”—Australian Press As CRAWFORD DEFEATS HERBERT BOWMAN.
