BASKETBALL.

TEAMS SHOW POOR FORM IN SENIOR GRADE. The games in the senior grade basket* ball on Saturday were unimpressive and a lack of enthusiasm amongst the teams was very noticeable. The games uncovered very poor form, and for the most part were Aerv ragged displays. Training College A and B teams were not on the field on Saturday owing to vacation at college, ,and with the ending of the Varsity term this week there will be A ery few matches played off within the next few weeks. The game betAveen Digby’s and United, though a hard-fought game, was in no way brilliant, both sides showing ’ want of combination and many individual faults. Digby's, hoAveA-er, pro A- - the superior team and Avon by 6 points to 3. Technical; playing Avith two emergencies, defeated Sacred Heart, also playing three third-grade players. This game, like that between Digby’s and United, was A-ery ragged. In their second game Sacred Heart, playing Varsity A, seemed to brighten up and put more vim into their play, and though three points behind Varsity- in the first half. e\*entually emerged victorious- by 12 points to 8. The position of the teams after Saturday’s games are as follows: — Matches. Points. Ch P. W. D. L. For. Ag.Pts.

United Go Under. In a game which pro A-ed Aery uneventful Digby's defeated United by 6 points to 3. In the first half Digby’s had much the better of the play, whilst United offered weak opposition. United goal suffered from the absence of N. Betts, whose goal work is a considerable asset to the side. D. Brown) at goal for United showed fair form, but did not show up as well as she has in some earlier matches. In the second half the play was much more eA-en, both sides scoring two points, but United were not able to make a strong enough effort to eA’en the scores. Of the Digby players, K. Sharman was perhaps the only one who appeared up to her usual form, and she played a good game on defence. M. Matthews worked hard in goal and was noticeable in seA-eral scoring movements. M. DeA-an was the best of the United defence. A Good Recovery. Sacred Heart made a remarkably good recQvery in the second half of their match with Varsity A. At halftime the score was five points to two in favour of Varsity. Both teams seemed to be affected by that end-of-season feeling and a disinclination to work hard, with the result that play was very slow. Sacred Heart were three short of their usual team, but the three emergencies certainly did good work and were much more energetic than the rest of the team. Varsity A were not combining as well as usual, but had much the better of the game in the first half. After halftime, however. Sacred Heart carried the game into their own quarters and managed fairly successfully to keep it there. P. Clements was playing a good game in the centre and E. Shamy, an emergency, played a good game. I. Poole, though playing Aery carelessly at first, made a good effort in the second half and scored six out of the ten goals. It is a pity this young player does not put her mind more on the game and play with greater care, since she could if she tried develop into a first-class player. On defence P. O'Reilly played a good game but was handicapped by the fact that she was the only one of the usual defence playing. V. Flood was rather disappointing at centre, playing only* a fair game. Of the Varsity players, C. WestWatson played a strong defensive game, supported well by C. Camm and W. Milner, whilst B. Andrews worked well in goal. The game Avent to Sacred Heart by 12 points to S. Technical Victory. A game lacking in incident Avas that betAveen Technical and Sacred Heart. Avhen Technical gained the day by six points to one. Technical, playing Avith two emergencies, did not shoAv their usual combination. Passing on both sides Avas \*ery weak and scoring Avas A-ery slow. Sacred Heart goal saw a good deal of. the ball, but the goalthrowers’ efforts Avere A-ery spiritless. For Technical, J. Amy played well at centre and S. Boyd Avas good on defence. M. Upritchard was the best of the goal-throwers but she did not show up to advantage on attack. On attack for Sacred Heart a third grade player, K. Glubb, placed a splendid game and had she been able to throw goals Sacred Heart would not, perhaps, haAe scored so poorly.
