MIXED RACE IN ISLANDS.
PROFESSOR SPEAKS OF POLYNESIAN PEOPLE. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, August 20. Professor Macmillan Brown, Chancellor of the New Zealand University, returned by the Maui Pomare from a visit to' Niue, where he says there are great possibilities in the production of copra and bananas. A recent epidemic of influenza caused the deaths of a number of the older natives. The patients received every care at a well-equipped hospital. Professor Brown said that he had not seen so mixed a race in any other Polynesian island. A blonde strain appeared to crept into Melanesia through Polynesia. It was not due to marriage with European stock, and he conjectured that it was the result of individual migration, particularly from Tonga. The tongue had distinct traces of the Tongan element. There were about 2700 natives on the island, all under Christian influence. The births about counterbalanced the deaths.
Captain Luckham, head of the Administration, the professor regarded as a very capable man. Niue had the reputation of being one of the most efficiently governed of the Pacific Islands.
