WINTER SHOW VISITED BY LARGE CROWD ON SATURDAY.
Saturday was Orphans’ Day at the Winter Show. In the morning children from the city orphanages were received and entertained. A Punch and Judy show proved very popular. The children were given refreshments and a ride, oil the merry-go-round. Miss Bessie Macdonald’s pupils gave a dancing display from 11.30 a.m. till noon. In the afternoon, in addition to the musical programme, exhibitions were given by Miss Macdonald’s junior pupils, Mr Duckett’s gymnasium pupils and the St Andrew's College physical training class. On Saturday evening the attendance was very large. A musical programme was provided by the Municipal Band. The attendance during the day was: Adults 7,753 Children 2,496 Total 10,249 ‘‘Eat more fruit,” and “eat apples” are the devices on the Canterbury Fruitgrowers Association’s display of fresh fruit, near the western end of the Show. On the background of the display, there is a representation of William Tell’s famous exploit when the tyrant Gesler tried Tell's skill as an archer, and under this arc the words: ‘‘Keep up to the mark.” The display of apples proves that members of the association act up to these flrecepts. Both eating and cooking apples are very tempting as they rest in their cases, and the pears are of good shape and appearance. The red ticket of a first prize is the assosiation’s reward for having an effective spectacular display of fresh fruit.
