JUDGE MAY ORDER POLICE ACTION.
SHARP COMMENT IN DUNEDIN CASE. (Special to the “ Star. ”) DUNEDIN. August 18. In the Supreme Court Thomas Henry Brown claimed £SOO from George Augustus Herbert for alleged slander, based on a statement made by the defendant that the plaintiff had the speedometer of his motor-car wound five thousand miles before selling his car, thereby involving himself in a conspiracy to defraud. The plaintiff denied having tampered with the speedometer, or instructing anyone else -to do so. The defendant maintained -that his words were true and that the speedometer was actually wound back. Mr Justice Ostler accepted the evidence of the plaintiff as true, he having proved that the speedometer was not wound back. The defendant, his Honor said, had made an impudent and daring attempt to defeat the course of justice. He directed the Registrar to impound all the exhibits, and said that he would consider whether to recommend the police to investigate with a view to criminal proceedings.
