English Girl Swims Channel, But Man Gives Up.

IVY HAWKES, OF BRIGHTON, CROSSES FROM FRANCE TO ENGLAND, TAKING NEARLY 20 HOURS. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Received August 20, 10.30 p.m.) LONDON, August 19. TWO Channel swimmers, Miss Ivy Hawkes, of Brighton, aud Frank Perks, of Birmingham, left Cape Grisnez at 9.47 p.m. and at 10.2 p.m. respectively on Saturday. Perks soon overtook Miss Hawkes, but gave up at 8.7 a.m. to-day, five miles from England. Miss Hawkes was successful and landed at St Margaret’s Bay at 5.30 p.m., after being nearly twenty hours in the water. The swim was carried out under official supervision.—Australian Press Association-United Service.
