SPRING FROCKS ON THE LAWN AT RICCARTON.

**lt’s c an ill wind that blows nobody _gooci/ 4 ’ and the wind that, crept in from the east to-day evidently fulfilled its mission in life, for it scattered 1 the massing clpuds. apd-brought a day of .'sUnshifie'fdr the racegoers At Riecarton. After a Wepk. of. rain even . the smallest favour to be accepted '•witlr-'du’fe'' Taking' advantage :<>£'■ the sunshine the .feminine, portion, of . the., Rjccartpiv assembly decided to don those spring frocks that for a week had been wanting an airing. Much black gave the lawn a sombre appearance, but this was relieved by the bright colours of many of. the frocks and the gay posies.Spring hats predominated. This year these are particularly attractive; perhaps their appeal is enhanced by a surfeit of felt hats. It is pleasant to see lighter head-gear in bright colouring, banded simply, it is true, but none the less attractive for that. \

■ Tweed is likely' to be popular this year, and the old friend navy blue conspired effectively with red or with almond green in more- than one striking costume.

As for colour, blue seems'to be first favourite, and hats ot delphinium:' blue, wraps of a deeper shadfc, and frocks of blue were all worn. Lind, has only Paleta and the Acre— Monovale *mare in work- Both are engaged at the. Marton meeting. W. Dwyfer will give Kiosk a run at Marton. in the Railway Handicap. The

Tea Tray gelding came on well, and has gone on the right way since. He should be in good fettle for his early races. The Night Raid filly in the same stable has been galloping in very attractive style, and she promises to be one of the smartest two-year-olds. W. Rayner has nothing engaged at Marton, but his team are all going along well, particularly Episode, Mask, Ceremony and Alloy. It is intended to give Ceremony a run in the parade at Wanganui, but he will not race until the Avondale meeting. The brother to Lysandcr is shaping in fine style, and he will probably prove a brilliant customer. Alloy will be seen out in the Debutante Stakes if he goes on all right, He is improving at every gallop, and looks likely to win some good races later on. Rayner is not hurrying Pedestal, and the half-brother to Commendation is unlikely to race before the Peilding meeting in November. His trainer has hopes of him repeating Episode's performances of last season. ■Mask will be a runner in the big. handicap at Wanganui on the first, day, and probably in the Eclipse Stakes, in which Episode will also be a starter if she runs up to expectations in the Guineas Mask is in great heart, and track work that he will be better than ever this season. K Episode continues to do- all'that is asked of her in most satisfactory style. Lysander has only Ijeen ip. training three weeks, but he is hardening up nicely and will be given a run in sprint events at Wanganui. It w-as most unfortunate for Air G. Currie to have the colt ! by Limond out of Remon foaled three, days too soon, as .in view of the performances of Afotlev and Lysander the youngster should turn out a chain pion. The Hawk is booked to race at Wanganui, and-;-will be a starter in' the Eclipse Stakes, which promises ,to bring together a very select field, including Reremoana, Kiosk. Bright Glow, The Hawk, .Episode, Laughing Prince, Star Stranger, and one or two. others. F. Tilley 'will, have 1 a team of seven or eight . at Wanganui, , including Laughing Prince arid Glenross. The former wil be a runner in the sprint on the first day and the Eclipse Stakes on the second day. Last season Laughing Prince was not seen at his best in some ' races, owing to'soreness, but he is going along nicely in his preparation, but has hot been long up and will not be so forward as the others at Wanganui. Glenross .is. doing well,’’and should be at his best here. Tilley will take Shining Armour, High Falutin, Afetellus, Cashier : and Otairi to ATarton: The weathpr was fine for training operations ..this morning, but the tracks were a bit heavy after the recent rains. Alask and Episode ran .six furlongs together, in lijiiii 17sec, both, hitting out well.' .. "■ Kiosk covered three furlongs in goou style in 38sec. Lady’s Boy" covered half a mile in 49 4-ssec. life is engaged in the Hack Cup at Marton, and is very' well'. Jet Black ran half a mile' in good style.' Limosa shaped .well in. a ,run jof .-seven furlongs, the last two in 28sec.
