MANY MEALS GIVEN AT SOUP KITCHEN.
Again during this week the figures of the free soup kitchen have been maintained. During the past week no fewer than SSI pieals have been supplied. The total for the three weeks that, the kitchen has been in operation is 2420.
Amongst the many seekers after meals are to be seen many hungry little children, and the attendants have been able to supply them with a good hearty meal. Thanks to the kindness of the various butchers, mainly Messrs Barrow, Dixon Bros, and the City Cash Meat Company, the helpers have been able to give the hungry ones soup for dinner and stewed sausages or tripe, with potatoes, for tea, sometimes varying this with a hot pie sent from the Beresford or other restaurant. The following cash donations have been received in addition to those already acknowledged:—Per Mr Chadwick, Lyttelton, £1; per Brigadier Burton, Anon. £3, Miss Moir £1; Commandant Rimmer. Mrs Gurnell £l, sundry amounts 6s 6d: per F. Drv ss, Commandant. Thompson, £2: M.E.8., £l. Many gifts in kind have also been received.
As will readily be seen, the need still exists for further assistance, and StaffCaptain Dry (telephone 6191 will be glad to receive gifts to help to keep up the supply of meals.
