CANTERBURY AND AUCKLAND PLAY CHESS MATCH BY TELEGRAPH.

The annual chess match by telegraph between Auckland and Canterbury was commenced on Monday evening last, the local team playing in the Can terbury Chess Club Rooms, Cashe! Street, where a telegraph instrumen* was installed with a , through wire tc the opposing team in Queen Street Auckland.

Play w ? as to have commenced shortly after six o’clock, but owing to diffi culties with the transmission play did not commence in earnest till aftei eight o’clock. From then on, very fail progress was made with the play, although the games were insufficiently advanced at the adjournment to enable any forecast to be made as to the probable result of the match. Mr J. P. Whatman umpired here fo; Auckland while Mr W. J. Ogle official ed in a similar capacity for Canter bury in the northern city. The loca operator was Mr C. M’Aloon and the local scrutineers, Messrs W. Kennedy R. Harding and S. Harding.

The Canterbury team are withou the services of Messrs W. S. King, H J. Armstrong, and Rev Friberg, of Leeston. Auckland won the toss and elected to move first at the odd numbered boards.
