An interesting visitor to port to-raor-row will be the Yarraville, carrying bulk petroleum from the Pacific Coast of America to the Vacuum Oil Company, Christchurch. The Yarraville represents the last word in tank steamer construction. She Is 460 feet long with a beam of 62 feet 6 inches and depth of 36 feet 6 inches, the dead weight carrying capacity of 12,800 tons. This is the Yarraville’s maiden trip to the Antipodes, she having been launched on February 13 from the Kingston Yard of Messrs Lithgows Ltd., Port Glasgow, Scotland. A set o'f triple expansion reciprocating steam engines, which give the ship a sea speed when fully loaded of twelve knots, was supplied by Messrs David Rowan and Co.. Ltd., of Glasgow. A Sperry Gyro compass and repeating instruments have been fitted. There is also a Sperry
course recorder which plots on a chart the vessel's movements during every minute of the day. An interesting feature of the navigation equipment is a Sperry mechanical helmsman, which has been found to be most efficient and reliable. This equipment, which is electrically operated, enables a course to be set and kept to without human intervention. In regard to this equipment, an interesting report was recently received from the Plume, a sister-ship of the Yarraville. in which it was stated that throughout the whole voyage recently made by the former vessel, the Sperry mechanical helmsman functioned correctly in every, detail. The Yarraville, is of course, equipped with wireless receiving and transmitting apparatus, as well as a. radio direction finder, which is a great aid to navigation. In addition, the crew are well provided with loud speakers for their personal entertainment. The Yarraville is commanded by Captain Cook, and associated with him as chief engineer, is Mr Sfableford. All officers and engineers are British. _ . It is not generally known that the company is a considerable ship-owner.
At the present time, it has in operation seven up-to-date tank steamers, all Clyde built, and it is anticipated that within the next few months, this number will be increased to nine by the addition of ttvo rpore tankers, one from the Tyne and one from the Clyde.
