ALICE IN WONDERLAND BALL.

IN AID OF GIRL GUIDES. Those who know and love their “Alice" must have found the ball last night at the Winter Garden particularly enjoyable. Organised in aid of the funds of the Girl Guides’ Association, by a committee whose members have had great experience in the arrangement of many charming functions — Lady Rhodes, Mesdames J. F. Studholme, W. Deans, Harold Barker, the Misses Bromley Cocks, Phyllis Boyle, and Barbara Gould—it was not surprising that it was an outstanding sucThe ballroom represented the garden where the “Ugly Duchess" entertained her strangely assorted guests at her famous croquet party. Trails of iycopodium overhead and “Noah’s Ark” trees standing at the intersections of the alcoves, a frieze where the Cheshire cat’s expansive “grin” alternated with hearts, diamonds, spades and clubs, enhanced the effect. The Bailey-Marston Orchestra supplied the music. Dainty mauve stylosa iris, early daffodils, jonquils and snowdrops, with native birch foliage and fern decorated the supper tables. Many guests appear - ear in characters from “Alice in Wonderland.”, The grotesque and varied head-dresses combined with the excellent way the costumes were represented made a colourful and spectacular scene. Tables were arranged for bridge in the lounge, and many enjoyed a “rubber.”

During the evening a Russian ballet dance, under the direction of Miss Emery was given by the Misses Kathleen Bristed, May Andrew, Molly Chapman, Meta Nixon. Maude Nichols, Norah Hoare, Doreen Kiver and Betty Macdonald, and later Mr Cyril Poulton and partner gave an exhibition dance. Among the many ladies present were:—Mesdames J. F.
