As if to prove that any Maori back can be a successful full-back, Watene, the Manukau three-quarter, held the last line of defence for the Northern Maoris against the Southern Maoris in last Saturday’s trial match at Eden Park (says the “N.Z. Herald”). He gave a most attractive display. With his side in a good position, Watene commenced to take risks and attempt the spectacular. On several occasions he was unlucky not to score, but, taking into consideration the touch of abandon which he imparted into his play, it must be said that he, too, has the makings of a very fine full-back. 2S *: » With the exception of Canterbury, it would appear that the standard of provincial Rugby in the South Island is not high tbis year. Bradanovitch, who could not gain a place in the Auckland 6ide last season, has played regularly for Otago and has been selected to represent the South Island (comments a northern critic). Matheson. who played fine football in club matches here last season and who was kept out of the representative side by illness, has evidently not been considered by the Otago selectors, although he is reported to be playing well for University in Dunedin.
