POSITION No. 356. By C. Hefner. Black 2,4; kings 18, 19.
White 1.1, 33, 14; king 8. White to play and draw. The play is as follows:
The accompanying game, which has very fine terminal play, was contested between A. Alexander, of Southport, and R. Wishart, of Dundee:— The " Switcher.”
(a) Mr Alexander, who Is blind, handles the pieces in fine style. (b) Walking into the trap that has been laid for him. The only hope' of a draw is by—22—18 17—21 11— 8 33 22 B—l2 15—11 7—lo 26—17 25—22 21—25 22—17 (c) a beautiful finish.
Drawn. (a) 3—33 and 16—20 are usual. (b) White gets an early grip. (c) But should not have played this, allowing the double cut next. Curiously enough, on the few occasions White had this position 24—19 had been played here, leading to a powerful game each (d) 27—23 seems better. (e) Powerful. If instead 3—7, 27—23; B—l2, 23—LG; 1 2—19 (11 —20 is correct and strong), then 18—14, etc., but Mr Towns is not to be lured into a three for two, preferring to prescribe such medicine for his opponent instead. (f) The 22—lg cut, so often played in Somewhat similar positions, is no’t. to be thought of here. (Black has one. man too many on hls single corner side). White realises that he is up against it, and has a busy time thinking almost up
