English Park was in good order this afternoon for the first round in tho local series for the Chatham Cup. Thistle engaged Technical and Western inet Nomads. THISTLE V. TECHNICAL. Both teams commenced one short. Technical had a full quota when Bridgens arrived. Thistle opened their account in the third minute, Spelrs registering with an oblique drive from the left. Technical took a hand, and a dropping shot, from the left had Grieg in difficulties. A free-kick brought relief. M’Gilp’s arrival gave Thistle a full team. Bridgens (Technical) received on the right to go close with a good drive. On the other wing Smith was unlucky with a nice header. Nice work by Arbuthnot gave Tliistle a chance along the left, but Spelrs finished weakly. Dull exchanges followed, with Technical halving somewhat the better of things. They went close to equalising in a warm couple of minutes in Thistle's area, but a free-kick relieved. Technical kept up the pressure, but could not get through and tjie interval arrived with the score: Thistle 1. Technical 0. The second spell opened at a good pace with both goals visited in turn. Thistle were short when Bristow retired injured. Goode broke down the centre for Technical, passed to Phelps and regained possession, only to shoot over the bar. Thistle replied along the right, and D. Sutherland dropped a long on© to to goal. In attempting to clear, Kirk swung tho ball over the line, and Thistle were two up. Greig resumed at this stage. A minute later Arbuthnot added a third with n. thirty vards effort from the left. Technical swung into the attack, and for a foul against Greig were awarded a penalty. From the spot J. Teichert made no mistake. Thistle 3. Technical 1. Following a Thistle right-flank thrust. Technical went down, but solid defensive work kept them out. and Thistle returned. A. Sutherland missed narrowly with a great long-range shot before I>. Sutherland hooked a short one through. Full-time came a couple of minutes later with the ball in midfield and the score;— THTSTLE 4 TECHNICAL 1 Referee: Mr Jl. Smyth. WESTERN V. NOMADS. Prom the kick-off Western attacked Strongly and for some minutes made the game fast, but never got dangerously near. After a prolonged attack, Kennedy shot in a beautiful ball which gave M’Pougall no chance. Nomads returned determinedly, a corner resulting. Back came Western, hot on the trail, a strong shot from Balloon being brilliantly cleared by M’Dougall. Nomads returned and Allen put a beauty across to Wilson, whose kick Just, grazed the cross-bar. A free-kick right in front of the Western goal was cleared for a corner. Nomads continued their attack and were now making the game. Play was fast and very willing on both sides. Western now pressed strongly, their attack ending In a shot from Harbutt being prettily cleared by M’Dougall. Nomads made a most determined attack, but an off-side penalty gave Western the chance to clear and t.he. game remained in mid-field for some minutes. A corner gave Nomads a chance, but Scragg missed, his shot going over the bar. The pace slackened now, and in rather tame exchanges both sets of forwards missed chances. Halftime came, with the score:— Western J., Nomads 0. From the kick-off, Western attacked, but Nomads soon tame ai ic the pace for a few minutes. Western put up a hot attack, and a corner resulted. Thompson put in a splendid kick, which was well cleared by M’Dougall. Another Western attack saw Harbutt in possession. He passed neatly to FalToon, who missed an easy kick. Nomads cleared, but Western were soon hack, and a corner -resulted. A period of dull play in mid-field gave way to ail ineffectual attack by Western. With twenty minutes still to go, the light was failing badly. Western were now well on the attack, and were pressing all the time without a great deal of success. The game, probably on account of the light, was now very dull. Western were still attacking when the whistle went, and the game ended with the score:— WESTERN 1 NOMADS 0
