OBITUARY.

CAPTAIN W. A. MORGAN. The late Captain W. A. Morgan, who died at Christchurch on Monday, was born at Manutahi, in Taranaki, in the year 1875, and was a son of the late Edmund James Morgan, of Gillingham. Dorset, and Mrs Emily Morgan, now of New Plymouth. In 1897, when a trooper in the Hawera Mounted Rifles, he was one of those chosen by the late General Davies to proceed to England to attend the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebration. On the outbreak of the Boer War he enlisted for military service with the first New Zealand contingent, returning from South Africa after considerable fighting. He received conspicuous mention in despatches. The late Captain Morgan left, again with the eighth New Zealand Contingent as a commissioned officer. On lys return from South Africa, at the end of the war, he joined the staff of the Defence Force, and was stationed in the North Island and afterwards at Christchurch and Timaru. At the time of his death Captain Morgan was on the reserve of the first South Canterbury Mounted Regiment. In 1904 he married Florence, daughter of the late E. G. Wright, of “Windermere,” Ashburton. In 1907 he resigned his position with the Defence Forces and took up farming in the Ashburton Countj-. The late Captain Morgan was connected with the Masonic fraternity, and took a keen interest in the progress of the Mount Somers district. He leaves a widow, a son and a daughter.
